Jolla at MWC 2017

MWC 2017 is just around the corner, taking place in Barcelona from 27th February to 2nd March, and this year Jolla is again taking part in MWC to spread the word of Sailfish OS.

Both official websites https://jolla.com/ and https://sailfishos.org/ already got a new design: https://twitter.com/JollaHQ/status/834774637061996544

The blog post 'Meet Jolla in Mobile World Congress 2017' mentions the following

Quote:

This year’s Mobile World Congress is particularly important to us, since we want to showcase our company’s new strategy in a big scale, and convince potential new partners, and the industry of our new path and potential.

We are working tightly together with our licensing partners at the event, and hope to make some positive noise with our new partnership announcements.
Previously Jolla already hinted to release a new community device and Jolla's CEO mentions in the blog post 'Letter from Jolla CEO: a strong Sailfish year ahead of us!' that after the deal with Rushia Jolla is also planning to expand to other BRICS countries like China, Latin America and Africa.

Sami Pienimäki also writes the following

Quote:

We’re planning for further Sailfish community devices and programs to empower the community and all Jolla & Sailfish fans.

Stay tuned, we hope to announce something exciting for you already in Mobile World Congress in a few weeks.

So what do you expect Jolla to present at MWC 2017?
Are we actually going to see a great new hardware partner releasing a high-quality Sailfish OS powerd device?

At this point, any device with sailfish OTB would do. Because evrything else didn't do much. Intex was/is a bust, that russian phone is lost in translation and turing was never there to begin with. :(

this translation is just....... well, lost.
Unlike iOS and Android, this platform stores the user's personal data in the smartphone and transmit it to foreign servers.
Today the system is officially installed on multiple devices: Jolla Phone, Jolla C, Oysters SF and Ermak weapons of mass destruction
now, I'm not sure if I should support them anymore :D

I've seen the 'weapons of mass destruction' thing before. Seems WMD is Russian initials for 'Open Mobile Platform', which is the group adapting Sailfish?

[or that's just what they want us to believe :D ]

There must be a "not" missing in the first sentence, ins't it? I mean, weapons of mass destruction is one thing, but transmitting my personal data to foregein Servers is much worse ....

Yep :D
OMP stands for Open Mobile Platform (in Russian — Otkrytaya Mobilnaya Platforma) and at the same time for weapon of mass destruction (in Russian — Oruzhie Massovogo Porazheniya).

What is also interesting, INOI (in Russian Inoy or иной) can be translated as '(an)other', 'different', 'not like others'. That's how they emphasise difference from android and ios devices, I believe.

And for sure that controversial passage has the opposite meaning in the original. So, correct translation is: Unlike iOS and Android, the platform stores the user's personal data in the smartphone and do not send it to the foreign servers.

Ha Ha! Not sending data to foreign servers does not mean you will not have data sent to "your" server...

I dont give a crap a bout a new community device.

What I want is official sailfishos on FP2! How hard can it be?

mariusmssj 2017-02-24 19:23

Re: Jolla at MWC 2017

all I want is a half decent phone with a really good camera. SailfishOS is quite efficient so it does not need 10-core CPU but one thing that has always been really lacking is the camera :(

just give me [something] i can buy.

a new community device would do, provided i have a realistic shot at actually being able to get hold of one.

but preferably a partner with a product that actually gets released and has widespread distribution.

the j1 was a hardware disappointment for me. the tablet looked great but never got delivered. the jollac was available to purchase.

how long can jolla continue as a company with a phantom product?

Re: Jolla at MWC 2017

Jolla's revamped website manages to tell a lot in just nine pictures.

- Jolla 1: "we made this, three and a half years ago"
- Jolla C: "this is the same thing as the Aqua Fish in one of the next pictures, and also almost no one has this because we only sold 1000 devices to a few bulk eBay resellers"
- Fairphone 2: "someone else made this"
- Sailfish Watch: "no one made this because it doesn't exist"
- Jolla Tablet: "we made this but had unexpected problems so almost no one has this or even any kind of tablet with Sailfish OS"
- Jolla Launcher: "we made this two and a half years ago, and never made any updates after the alpha testing phase"
- One Plus X: "someone else made this"
- Turing Phone: "this was never made"
- Intex Aqua Fish: "this is a really poor quality piece of plastic made by a really poor quality company which we then resold at over twice the price calling it the Jolla C"

Yeah, it's telling that they are selling software, not hardware, which I thought it would be clear by now?

velox 2017-02-25 11:34

Re: Jolla at MWC 2017

@nthn: so in short you expect to see "I don't like their new homepage. A lot." on MWC. That's nice. (That said, I agree on some points you make between harsh criticism.)

I'm only expecting news about what has been teased:
  • Some kind of new manufacturer deal.
  • A new "community device", which will, again, be "sold" without warranty (except for us lucky EU people where that is illegal, IANAL though). I hope for a small device, comparable to N9 (or N950!) in size and usability.

[edit: replaced the word "hating" with "harsh criticism" to solve some problems in the world.]

It is. We are just trying to figure out what's the point of SW when there's no HW to run it on.

My post was intended as a reply to jedibeeftrix, agreeing with the 'phantom product', which I hope will be changed for the better in a week. If people could stop misinterpreting harsh criticism for hate speech, there would probably be less problems in the world. I wish Jolla all the best and I understand they have had many issues they could do nothing about (like the tablet), but how many people even know of, let alone care for, their existence outside of TMO/TJC? They constantly announce new promises, new partnerships, new this, new that, and every time it turns out to be nothing. I expect nothing from MWC, but I genuinely hope they managed to form a proper partnership with a manufacturer like BQ and will announce a new, well-built, officially supported phone available for purchase and use in Eurasia and North America.

Don't mention your hopes for a smaller phone on TJC, though, because there is a certain user called bocephus there who must have received such immense injustice from a small-device-enthusiast that he is now out on a crusade to smite all those who dare utter the blasphemous words "I don't like phablets".

There has to be some North American vendor/company that would invite Sailfish on a device that would work on LTE frequencies here AND get support from Jolla directly (read: no ports).

Certainly with the hiatus of Ubuntu Touch there were a few manufacturers dabbling with alternative operating systems which might still be looking to offer something different.

BQ and Meizu both released multiple Ubuntu based devices, maybe they'll try sailfish out instead?

I don't know what Jolla do to devices, but they manage to add an extra layer of "finish".

The devices are always in some way smoother and better tuned than community ports.

Helps when you have an experienced team paid full-time to create these things, compared with a one person effort done in spare time.

eekkelund

If it's true i like dimensions, but phone with this size and thickness MUST have at least 3000 mah battery. That would be great with SFOS.

There are many devices that are same size but much thinner with 3000 mah batteries.
