Holy cow. Good find.

Re: Linux on Galaxy...
This is great news! Hopefully there will be a version that simply works on the phone alone that is optomized for screen size.

Re: Linux on Galaxy...
I wouldn't bet on that :)

Re: Linux on Galaxy...
It looks somehow like Ubuntu for Windows 10, somehow bolted on to the the Android OS below or somehow appified.
Would really love a galaxy with Sailfish or the Librem OS, so we have to wait how much integration they actually offer. |
Re: Linux on Galaxy...
According to the article at pro-linux.de [1] it's some sort of non-Android Linux running on the Android kernel.
So it's basically a chroot, just like Easy Debian. And eventually it will suffer the same fate: Once there are no more upgrades of the Android kernel for the device it will just be a matter of time until the chroot system can't be upgraded anymore. Re: Linux on Galaxy...
On the other hand, Jolla's libhybris has show that it is indeed possible to run a full blown GNU/Linux distro above an Android kernel without a chroot.
So I'm kind of expecting a "Sailfish DeX" to be announced by Jolla anythime soon :-D |

The N900 is my phone for 7 years now and I would have loved to replace it with something more modern for at least half of that time. But I just couldn't find an alternative. Android, Apple and MS are out of the question, because I don't trust them. Besides, even if I trusted them, there were few devices that I actually liked from a HW POV. Although I still use my N900 it's always been some love-hate thing, mainly because I'm frustrated with the limitations that are a consequence of Maemo's proprietary core. The N900 has tought me not to settle with something that is "semi open" again. This is why I didn't get a Jolla and it's also why I hope the Librem 5 will become true, even at the cost of a hardware keyboard, which I would not even have considered two years ago. I guess I'm just growing desperate. ;) |

8-9 years being my normal hardware upgrade cycle, with my "new" kit being usually 1-2 years old, this thread seems like the right place to start looking ;) |

I too feel the limitations of the old hardware, probably even more than the lack of openness, but since that's not a design flaw it doesn't upset me. What upsets me is the fact that for fixing the non-design flaw of old hardware by replacing it with newer hardware I still have to accept the actual design flaw of unnecessary closedness. I'm not willing to pay for that design flaw (again). |
Re: Linux on Galaxy...
In the past I've set up my older Galaxy Note to show phone screen on a monitor. Including running linux on android app with which I used ubuntu and fedora. So I could run a full linux distribution on phone and use a monitor. But the main problem was that the sound was always lousy. Presumably linux on galaxy will not have this issue.

It's using containers and provides accelerated graphics too:

Re: Linux on Galaxy...
That is very cool but how it is differ from chroot-ing a linux image on n900...? Sorry for my stupidity but... you know, for me chroot on n900 is working for years now and this is like Samsung reinventing the wheel... (OK, current kernel and other stuff...)

One more thing. The Huawei Mate 10 also makes a desktop environment when you connect to a monitor using a usb c to hdmi cable. Only the desktop environment is Android. So you can run all your phones apps if you like (including phone). Also phone screen can act like a mouse. Or use bluetooth mouse and/or keyboard. In principle you could chroot your favourite linux version on the Mate 10 if you needed that functionality. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVwyB3R-R08 |

They just marketing it like that, just how Apple does with their products |

But, to be optimistic my question is: theoretically is this mean that every Android device would be able to do such a thing...? (I'm aware of the 'DEX' in the video but I do not think that the Dex is responsible for this, or is it...?) |
