I understand that there is an application for open street tools under developement and wonder if this could be incorporated or ported over to N800 as seperate app.

Sure.
Though it would be necessary port libnotify or to remove this dependence using another method.
Later I will give it a glimpse, though I don't have a gps here to verify that it works.

Open Street is another great Floss effort. I would certainly want my next
GPS to be able to remember more that my Etrex and report everything to
OpenStreet. Being in the disaster areas of third world countries for months
at a time make this difficult because Wifi is not available and I do not have
a bluetooth phone that can make inexpensive calls or even make a connection
the majority of the time.

this would be a cool app for stuff like hiking, long trips, etc. To be able to annotate with voice would be handy. One thing that would make it cooler would be to add a pict that can taken with the n800's cam.
