Some general info on SailfishOS status & suitable devices
Please help me figure this out.
What is the currently best-developed and stable SailfishOS version? From what I can see, it's SailfishX (is that the same as Sailfish 3?), and the list of devices is small: Sony Xperia™ 10 and Xperia™ 10 Plus, Sony Xperia™ XA2 product variants, Sony Xperia™ X, and Gemini PDA. (source) Am I correct? Are there any outstanding community contributions for other hardware I should be aware of? Where can I look up development status and official statements? The blog gives the impression of moderate but continuous activity? Any sort of slightly more technical news? Open Source repositories to look at? __________________________ I guess these are my general questions. More specifically: I could get my hands on an Intex Aquafish for ~75€, tomorrow. It currently has Sailfish 2.0 installed. Apparently it can be updated to Sailfish 3.something. Is that a current version of SailfishOS? Again, is Sailfish 3.x the same as SailfishX??? I suppose a self-upgraded version will not include Android support? If I buy the license, will it be transferable to any new device I choose to buy? Is it a lifetime License? _____________________________ Is installing SailfishOS on one of the supported devices a smooth and pain-free experience, and can I expect an "everything works ootb experience" after that? Thanks. |

This would have "older" version of Android support which is starting to have limitations as apps. are updated and only run on later version. If you buy a Sailfish X license it applies specifically to either Xperia X, XA2 or Xperia 10 and is not transferable. If however device broke you could ask to have it transferred to replacement of same variant. Remember you must ensure that any Xperia X, XA2 or Xperia !0 can be 'bootloader unlocked" which is not always the case. As regards working "OOTB" whilst Sailfish can be flashed via Linux, Mac or Windows, I wouldn't like to count the "lost hours" over the years. Lastly remember that coronavirus will have affected Jolla's HongKong office badly, so although work carried out by developers globally all the dots don't get joined up as usual. I still use Xperia X Compact daily running Sailfish 3.2.1.20 as similar form factor to N9 and find XA2 a little too big. |

Re: Some general info on SailfishOS status & suitable devices
Thanks for all the good info.
I am confident I would be able to install SailfishOS myself. Quote:
Is there any way to find out before purchasing? ____________________________ Even after glancing at all those pages, I am still unclear on this: Sailfish3.x is the current version, yes? What is SailfishX then? How are those 2 versions related? |

@nonsuch start using google. https://developer.sony.com/develop/o...ck-bootloader/ Sailfish 3 and X is the same if you asking about version. |
Re: Some general info on SailfishOS status & suitable devices
@atlochowski: thank you, but I prefer other search engines.
I notice that most ebay sellers specify "unlocked" for Xperia devices, so that's OK then I guess. Back to the AquaFish: I feel that 65€ (plus shipping) for a used Intex AquaFish is not a very good price, what do folks think? Also I think I should ask the guy about Frequency bands for 2/3/4G and telephony... |

most xperia X devices can be bootloader-unlocked. SOME cannot, including, for instance, docomo-branded devices from japan. all you can do is buy one from someone that accepts returns. open the box, turn on the phone, open the phone-dialer-app, and dial *#*#7378423#*#* if you see: Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status Bootloader unlock allowed: no instead of "yes", return the phone. if you see yes, then you can unlock it yourself fairly easily. (ive bought one xperia-x, one xperia-xa2, and FIVE xperia-x-compacts, all from ebay in USA. only one of the compacts was allowed=no, the rest were allowed=yes) |

^ Thanks, wolke.
I decided against the Intex AquaFish and bought an (actually cheaper) Xperia XA2 that already has SailfishOS installed - I guess that answers that question :D Looking forward to this. |
