What happened to the Future?: Frustrated with the current state of mobile devices and OSs
Long time no see, after 8 years, I have logged back in to catch up and whine about the world.
I first joined in 2011. This was just after highschool for me. The world was more interesting then in terms of tech, now it is boring generally. I would argue that computers oems and components are actually still exciting. But mobile on the other hand is boring. I keep going through this depressing state every 6 months where I just hate the current phone and os options. My device history: psp>Sony Mylo comm2> Nokia 5230>Palm Pre2>Nokia 700>HP Pre3>Blackberry Z10>Nokia Lumia 520>Blackberry Classic>Sony Xperia XA>Huawei P20 Lite. I have been using Android the last few years and I absolutely hate it. I was never a fan of the OS and have just been suffering with it. Every Alternative (OEM) OS more or less died around 2010-2013. We lost Symbian, Meego, webOS, BB10, Windows Phone/Mobile, Firefox, etc. Sailfish/Jolla has even more or less gone quiet. Now we are stuck in a world with either chocolate of vanilla ice cream but all I want is pistachio. Every few months I debate going back and losing all this useless connectivity that all these apps give us. Make everyone text you again. Every time I think about doing it I realize there is not this specific app I use regularly on these old platforms. Nowadays its probably a Spotify or a decent podcast app. Can I live without google maps? who knows. Can I actually get my friend to chat with me in test? Who knows. I just am curious if the remaining people here feel the same way? What do you think of this current world of mobile? Any suggestions? How is the Maemo Community? |

But welcome to 2020, people are realize that and looking for solution to escape for that. And Maemo Leste will be one solution in long run. |

I have been using sailfish since 2012 when I changed over there from N9/Harmattan and doing OK. If Jolla ever stops SFOS support then I probably move over to Leste.
I think it should be surprisingly painless for you to drop Android all the way and move to something sensible. Spotify is not supported but I dropped my subscription and set up my own radio station that I cast from. |

Has SailfishOS "gone quiet"?
I don't see it; they post on their blog that they're happy about going into a new decade, they seem to have at least two lucrative contracts and are surely interested to keep us as beta testers, no? Of course it's more "quiet" than Android, but "gone quiet" surely is wrong? |

There is Maemo Leste
.. There is Ubuntu Touch.. There is Maru ... There is Bliss.. As OS alternatives...to Android I've used / am using them... A nice change from the norm I'll say.. All of the above have good communities ..good support...and good teams fixing what issues they inevitability get.. Leste is in a work in progress state... But it is coming along.. So it isn't quite as grim as it was ...say 5 years ago.. |

I'd say not. And that is the biggest trouble with "the current state of mobile devices and OSs" - almost all of those claiming to be "alternatives" are based on Android anyhow. Try to find the real alternatives in that heap! |
Re: What happened to the Future?: Frustrated with the current state of mobile devices and OSs
Well ....
Firstly Maru isn't totally Android ...since the moment you plug into a monitor you are in a containerized Debian 9 at that point.. So you are half right with Maru.... And you are completely right with Bliss.. concerning Android I do think however ...that you may be at this moment a "no-glass at all ...to be either half full or half empty...kinda guy"... from how I am seeing this dialogue play out.. Since there is Sailfish...and others not mentioned by me... Which aren't Android oriented as well... If you desire to vent about the lack of OS's out there ... vent about the lack of alternatives .. and wish to vent about the domination of Android ... I understand and sympathize... But my sympathy doesn't go very far... Since there ARE viable alternatives.. And quite a few too....nowadays... This isn't 5 or 10 years ago.. a great deal has changed... there are alternative OS's that are options, that aren't Android based.. There is still a ways to go...but that is always the case... So I don't quite think it is as bleak as you paint it. And now this is the time in the conversation where things are going to start changing... Go back and look at the totality of my preceding post. Then look at the edited clip of it you took and used for your purposes... I think taking a clip ...of a statement... mentioning 2 OS's out of the others I also mention and calling them "a heap" ..is severe over exaggeration ... Next... this is the part of the conversation where I tear you a 2nd a*****e... You don't have the right .. Don't you f*** with my words and cherry pick them and try to use an edited version of what I said as your argument... I'm not your stooge ... Find another patsy for your angst.. I am not interested . |
