I expect the typical product lifespan to be 18 months or so. That given, there should be at least a 3 to 6 month overlap between device platform iterations, so discounts at half to 2/3 of a product's life make a lot of sense to me. Discounts after 2 or 3 months, not so much.

I know, I was just being a smart ***. ;) Jumping from #2046 to #9 on the sales chart can only be a good thing.

And considering it was launched in January and we're fast approaching the holiday buying season, this makes perfect sense.

Can I just add this is nothing compared to phones. If you want the latest mobile phone with the latest features, even from a single manufacturer, you'd have to buy a new device every month (which a few crazy people actually do).

Even a single model can have several new hardware versions within a year (eg. wifi added, more ram, bigger screen etc).

Having the latest hardware iteration of portable devices seems to be getting less and less financially plausible. Hopefully though manufacturers will keep the same versions of software platforms for many years, so it doesn't really matter which device you have as long as it's part of the current platform.

That's 171 euros! I bet the european price will stay at 399. I'm not really happy to have bought one just a couple of weeks ago for 80 euros more (bought from the states on ebay). My usual luck :(

Now that is a good price! That is one good way of keeping N800 competitive with other new and "similar" consumer products, smart move Nokia.

It happens to us all. Whenever you buy a gadget nowadays, there will either be a price cut or a new device just a few months away. It all moves so quickly now.

When I got a first home computer in the 1980s, it was a ZX Spectrum, which received commercial software releases on shop shelves from 1982 to about 1993, it had something like 10,000 games and apps released for it. It still has amateur software support 25 years later, with new game cassettes still being manufactured.

Nowadays you'd be lucky to find any hardware platform which is supported after two years. Maybe the games consoles, but even they are abandoned after about 4 or 5 years.
