Thinking about geting a N800, have one question

One of the things I want to do with the N800 is to use it as a GPS on my motorcycle. I was wondering how the display does with direct sunlight, I would be mounting it on my handle bars.

Thanks.

Actually, there is a guy who made a blog over several days from his trip all over the US on his motorcycle with the n800 and a gps receiver. I'll post the site addy soon.... BTW he found a way to mount his n800 with some kind of thing that blocked the sunlight from direct exposure to the n800

Be aware a new Nokia Internet Tablet is due to be announced any day now... you can probably get a good deal on the N800 now (and even better later), or you may want to wait for the new device if money isn't an issue (ie. it's going to be more expensive than the current N800 price).

Unfortunately, the N800 display is useless in direct sunlight, and very difficult to read in just ordinary bright daylight. When walking around cities with maemo mapper I found myself constantly seeking shadows so I could read the screen.

For direct sunlight you need a transflective screen, which the N800 doesn't have. (For all I know that could be the price for having such an otherwise excellent screen with extremely wide visibility angle)

If you want to die, try to read the N800 GPS while driving a motorcycle. I don't think I could use the GPS while WALKING in direct sunlight; I couldn't read it while STANDING in direct sunlight.

Well if you want to get a n800 for the gps you should look into navicore (n800 + navicore= :) I been using navicore for some months now and it's pretty cool. Maemo mapper sucks like hell I’m sorry I just really don't like it. I also have a Yamaha R1 2004 and I have used my n800 to get around it's not as easy to use as if one's driving a car but it get the job done, under my helmet my Bluetooth head set guides me to and from home with music playing

Unless you're fine with re-incarnation and coming back maybe as a bug or have a death-wish, don't be cheap.

Go get yourself a TomTom Rider, http://www.tomtom.com/products/category.php?ID=1&Lid=4 .

I was about to suggest the same. As merovingian says, get yourself a TomTom Rider. After planning the route (you can actually use your gloves on the touch screen) you won't even have to look at the display (or very very rarely at least), just follow the voice instructions in your ear. Test out the voices first, and select the one that's easiest to hear for you (considering background noise). 'Jane' is a good one IMO. :D
