Re: Jabber Question

Well, there are public Jabber servers that offer gateway serives to other IM services. However, I'm pretty sure you would have to set it up initially with another Jabber client (like Psi for the PC). If your willing to do that, then let me know and I'll post instructions tomorrow.

Re: Jabber Question

OK... Well here is the basic idea:

1) You need to download a Jabber client that supports "Service Discovery" and configuration. That will allow you to add any additional gateway services that the Jabber server offers. I like to use Psi :

http://psi-im.org/

2) You need to find an open Jabber server that allows registration and has the gateway service you are looking for. This will probably be the hard part, but maybe someone has additional suggestions. There is a list of open servers at:

http://www.jabber.org/user/publicservers.shtml

However it doesn't list their capabiliies. For example I know that the "jaim.at" server has AIM, ICQ, MSN, etc. However, I just took a look and they don't have Yahoo. Sorry I can't help more with this step, but after I figured out how this stuff worked I decided to just run my own server.

3) Create a new account on the server. This can be done through Psi by just walking through the account form.

4) Once the account is created and you are connected, then you should right click on the name of the connection in your contact list and choose "Service Discovery" A list will appear with all of the additional services offered by the Jabber server.

5) Find the service your interested in on the list. For example on my server it's named "Yahoo! Transport". Double click on it. Fill in your Yahoo username/password and click the register button.

Assuming you do that correctly, the server will provide gateway services to your Yahoo contacts through your Jabber account. Your Yahoo contacts will show up and you can message any of them and they can message you. This works the same with other services (AIM, MSN, ICQ, etc)

For anyone interested in running their own server, I've found Openfire to be excellent. I had some issues using Jabberd with the N800. Everything just works with Openfire, and the web admin and plugins are excellent. Even interfaces with Asterisk.

Re: Jabber Question

I guess I forgot the final step. You would just add that Jabber account to your N800. All the contacts will load into your contacts, etc. By going this route you can use all the built in IM, contacts, etc for things which is a lot more convient IMO.

Re: Jabber Question

It looks like that service just has some trouble with their Yahoo gateway service. The others gateways on that server seem to work fine. Odd.

Try making an account at MyJabber.net with PSI. It's an Openfire server that has all the gateways including Yahoo. I just gave it a shot and was able to connect to Yahoo through them just fine.
