virtual memory cannot be uninstalled
NOT a good Monday morning. I am running 2007He2007 on a 770 2 G MMC w boot from MMC. Now I cannot add new file to the MMC I think the FAT is corrupted. I would like to reformat it, and start with umount /media/mmc1. It said the system is using it and is busy. I know it is because the virtual memory is on it. I went to control panel and try to uninstall the 64 k virtual memory and it is unsucessful. What to do now? Would it be too dangerous if i delete the swap file on my window box with a USB cabel. I am scare to cook the MMC card, that is the only one I have. I have tons of SD cards though, ****** MMC-RS!

Now, I have no choice, got to go to work with my tablet. I will have to take my N800 to go to work in the "sock" protection.......like having sex with a homemade condom, hope it works.

Re: virtual memory cannot be uninstalled
When I got to the office, I safely put my N800 into a drawer, and take it out only when needed, not a perfect situation, but hey, better than go one day without my tablet.
One question, and I know it is NOT a fair question, why the MMC on 770/N800 is so easy to get corrupted but my SD worked so 'simple' in a camera that fell from belt height, and my Treo too. and the SD continue to work without problem. And in the Treo case, the SD 'jumped' out of the slot, thank god, it continues to work. And quite some times, the SD kind of 'spring' loose from the socket, not out yet, but just spring loose from an insert position, and nothing happened to the SD and my Treo. But on the 770, none of the above happened, and just sitting around and doing nothing, and the FAT is corrupted. Is the 770 hardware or software that is more fragile/delicate? Just a question, I dont really excited about the answer, I am more concern about recurrency............ bun |
Re: virtual memory cannot be uninstalled
Just turn it off, stick the card in a card reader and reformat. Problem solved.
I don't necessarily think the tablets have a high-propensity for corruption, but there is a lot more writing and reading going on than most devices which use SD/MMC (metacrawler indexing, VM swapping, and general file usage), so the numbers tend to come up more often. |

As for the corruption I don't know. I never had FAT filesystem corruption with my 770 (or even N800) and I am using my 770 almost 2 years and give it a lot of abuse. Maybe because I don't remove card often and rarely connect it over USB. |

Re: virtual memory cannot be uninstalled
Hey, good news for those with corrupted MMC. I took the MMC to a media reader, and erase the swap file. Voila, now my card is writing again! I do not have to reformat the stupid MMC-RS! I do not have to re-do URLs for the Video center. So far, keep the fingers crossed, i am able to write on the MMC. NO. I am scare to create another swap file. I just use the 770 without swap file. Apparantly, a damaged swap file will render your MMC read-only status and prevent writing. Fanoush, mind to shed light on this apparant observation? If, the swap file does make the MMC more vulnerable, I would rather leave it out the first place.

Re: virtual memory cannot be uninstalled
OK.
But I got a mac and a cheapo nGear multicard reader. I had about four videos and a bunch of .mp3s on the card that was quite happy in the N800. I removed the card, put it in the reader, transfered the videos to my desktop, changed the name of the card to 'Music' since I decided I wanted a dedicated card, everything is fine. Take a 4GB Patriot Class 6 card, put that in the reader, name it 'videos', transfer videos converted via the Internet Tablet Video Converter (a Nokia product, even!), unmounted everything properly. Put the 'video' card in the N800 - got the 'corrupt' error message. And, of course, the 'reformat' option is greyed out. Bah. So, put the 'music' card back in... and get the same damned error message. But both cards are reading properly in the card reader (and the music and videos are playing off the cards on my Mac fine). 1. I put the cards in while the N800 was on, 2. when I got the error messages, every time I switched cards, I turned the N800 off before swapping, 3. I'm a bit stuck since, aside from moving everything off the cards and reinstalling them, I'm not sure how I can reformat these cards since, like I said, I got a mac. Suggestions? |
