I'm suspicious there's no desktop image (and even if there was I'd be suspicious that it was courtesy of VNC).

This is just the graphic that appears during boot up or, more crucially, if you try and boot from the install DVD. I'm fairly sure you can get that to appear on ANY computer by booting from the OS X install DVD. You just won't get any further because the kernel will spot that it's not being run on Apple hardware.

From what I read, to build a "Hackintosh", you pretty much have to mirror the typical hardware inside an x86 Mac. As far as I know, they've never used a Celeron processor or a solid state hard disk.

You can definitely run Osx86 in a VMWare session. So this could be legit.

Just seems counter-intuitive and inefficient.

Like swimming with a brick around your neck.

Why is this even posted here? This forum is not about Apple or Asus. Its about Internet Tablets. Frankly this is just a waste of space. And IMO there is no credible competition for the Internet Tablet to date.

I'd say, "no".

All the devices currently on the market don't do the Walkaround-Web the way the NITs do. The Asus is too big and clunky, the iPhone/iPod Touch platform is too proprietary and too small (barely enough screen resolution to be usable), the OpenMoko stuff isn't here (and will have the same issues as the iPhone/iPod Touch when it does get here), the Archos devices are just a joke, Intel's MID platform, also, isn't here yet, and anything else I might've missed just doesn't have the hardware/software/developer-base to compete.

So, no, there really aren't any competitors to the NITs. :)

I'd have to grudgingly agree. Until recently, while clinging to my beloved 770, I wasn't convinced, but now that I have used a N800 and seen the difference, I think it's true.

Moreover, contrary to how things looked until this fall, it seems Nokia is making effective moves to conserve that "first-to-market" advantage when/if the actual competition arrives next year : the N800/N810 duo running the same codebase, more corporate endorsement and visibility, making amends with its user community, etc.

Also, Nokia does have a knack for detecting people and putting them to good use. The guys at INdT in Brazil, for instance, seem to have some really amazing projects cooking, that go way deeper than the eye candy.

That's not quite true (the bit about installing OS X on VMWare).

A standard OS X install disc won't work on VMWare. I've got both a Mac and VMWare Fusion, so I know this is true.

You need to get hold of a cracked version that's had various patches applied. Then it will install on ANY computer, including VMWare, or an Eee, although it helps if your peripheral hardware (sound,wifi) match those built-into a Mac.

This is also an apology for being wrong in my earlier posting. I've looked into it and the dude sounds like he has actually got it onto his Eee using the hacked version. He says if you use 10.4 it runs quite well. But you can't update (hacked flies overwritten) and I should think there will be a handful of other flaky aspects to the adventure too.

That's right: because it has created its own category of portable devices.

Sure, during the first year of the 770, almost every reviewer was basically saying "this category doesn't exist! Therefore I say that this device is pointless!" However, simply by sticking around and continuing to be developed, the Nokia internet tablets are slowly bringing their own unique category to life.

(Of course, just because it exists doesn't necessarily mean that it's a successful category. Not if you define "success" as being broadly adopted by the mainstream, and entered into by rival companies.)
