Changing the MAC address
 

I'm anxiously waiting for UPS to drop my N800 off this week!

My landlord provides me with wireless internet, but he's pretty paranoid about security so he only allows my laptop's mac address to connect to the router. I'm wondering if there will be a way for me to change the tablet's mac so that I can access Wireless without going through the hassle of getting in touch with the landlord?

Even if you could change the tablet MAC, you can't have two devices with the same MAC on the network, so it probably wouldn't work out anyway.

Why don't you buy a cheap wifi router ?
You can connect your laptop to the landlord's wifi then share that connection to devices connected to the laptop via ethernet (in this case, the new WiFi router).
the Wifi router then shares it's connection (from ethernet) to WiFi to the tablet (or whatever other Wifi/ethernet gadget you've got). Of course, you should configure you're Wifi router to not broadcast the SSID.

With a Mac this would be painfully EASY. With Linux and Windows I do have no idea how to do it.

In Linux its actually very easy to change the mac address, but in a Maemo variation I have no idea if its this simple, and have not tried it.

but its as follows

# ifconfig wlan0 down
# ifconfig wlan0 hw ether 11:22:33:44:55:66
# ifconfig wlan0 up

to check the changes just use #ifconfig wlan0

I've noticed it changes the mac address no worries, but the issue I think is connecting to the device, soon as you use the inbuilt wireless connection it seems to reset the wireless mac, or just doesn't connect to the AP, but that said im sure there is a way around it, I just haven't looked into it very hard.

As long as he doesn't use both devices at the same time it won't matter.
