N810 and the Wiki: reducing redundant threads

As the N810 grows in popularity, and new owners come onto this board, it seems that there are an increasing number of new threads with overlapping information; questions that have already been answered numerous times.

Even though many newbie questions have been answered before, there are situations where it can be daunting to search the forums threads, or even search engines. Sometimes, it's difficult to know what you're looking for, and the answer may be embedded deep within a thread/page with a mis-representative title. It's easy for regular users to take this for granted. New users, on the other hand, can be overwhelmed by the tremendous amounts of information, making it far easier to ask help.

We, as regular forum contributers, should take some responsibility to eliminate overlapping posts by posting information to the wiki, and then refer new users to it as an alternative to scolding new users for their various curiosities. Even if the wiki entry was a link to a forum thread holding the actual information, it would provide a highly structured informational resource that could greatly benefit the community and simultaneously keep conversation fresh.

Yay or nay? New ideas welcome.

Yay.

Those with new N810s will have been suggested to update the OS. And those with MacOSX will need instructions. The current wiki (maemo) entries refer to 770s and suggest removing the card. A pointer to N810 instructions would be helpful.

Re: N810 and the Wiki: reducing redundant threads

As a n00b I agree. Reducing redundancy and consolidating data would be tremendously helpful - I try to search before posting any question, but often the answers are buried in 15 pages of conversation.

But it does seem to me that the division is not (or at least won't soon be) between the n800 and n810 users, but instead the OS2007 users and the OS2008 users. There are a few hardware specific issues, of course, like the keyboard and GPS stuff. But most questions seem to be more about the OS and software.

I don't know how to deal with that, and wouldn't presume to say even if I did, but I just thought I'd bring that up.

Capt'n, count me as a yea. This is great idea, and a good resource, for both groups, regular contributors and newcomers. I know I've made good use of the Wiki since I got my N810.

Re: N810 and the Wiki: reducing redundant threads

I think everyone (who is here a lot, or a longtime user, or who gets a lot from ITT) should try to make a WIKI on a topic. I made one when I first got my 770 and was learning things. Its in the ITT wiki under Beginner's guide. I hoped other people would add topics. Might save us all a lot of reading if we had a good wiki and new users went there instaed of posting.

We could even have a thread to suggest WIKI topics and then people can add or pick one and put it into the WIKI. Usually the info is already in a post, so you don't have to type or think much. :)

New Wiki Section: FAQs, Problems and Solutions

When I looked at adding information to the Wiki tonight, I saw the need for a different kind of article group.

I have created a new section for "FAQs, Problems and Solutions":
http://internettablettalk.com/wiki/i..._and_Solutions

Please use this section to add current and common issues and provide either the solution or a link to a thread or post with information.

Note: this is in addition to the existing Wiki section for "How-to's, Tips, and Tricks", which are more like mini-tutorials. Please pick the section that best suits your information.

Re: N810 and the Wiki: reducing redundant threads

I'm glad that I'm not alone on this. Personally, I don't have an internet tablet, but still feel that I can contribute to the Wiki in the form of links. I've been maintaining the links section at the top of this forum, and will place the interesting links in the Wiki for future reference. I will continue to maintain the links thread!

Great work Technut! I see organization mirroring the effectiveness of the Wiki. The section that you've created will come in handy!

Re: N810 and the Wiki: reducing redundant threads

I had a look at the ITT wiki again, and then I remembered while I didn't update it in the past: I'm so used to Mediawiki these days that it's painful to use anything else. :(
I'll give it a try though, later.

I'm such a newbie to all things linux and the only programming I did was in highschool w/ basic, so any explanation of X Terminal in this wiki would be heavenly.
