Removing the Camera?
 

It looks like it might not be too difficult to remove the camera after looking at this video:

I'm not yet ready to rip apart my N800, but if it's easy enough to remove, and doesn't cause any problems, I'd like to pull that sucker out so I could take the N800 with me to more places.

So.. has anyone tried? :)

Do you work in some sort of sensitive environment that doesn't allow cameras, camera-phones and the like?

Yeah

I've also been to several performances or movie screenings that don't allow cameras of any sort, which I think is rather stupid.. so I try to avoid going to them if I know ahead of time :)

I've done it with several devices and my advice is to not do it: removing the camera is relatively easy, but opening and closing the device itself requires some care or you risk ending up with the frontplate too loose.
Removing the camera also makes it easier for moisture to infiltrate the device and damage the screen (the backlight is sensitive to moisture and corrosion).

This might be a stupid question (after all, it's me asking it) but doesn't the N800 camera pop into the chassis? People still know it's there?

If they're familiar with the device, or poke around enough, yeah.

I'm not too worried about that, just want to know if the N800 will still function correctly without the camera connected (minus camera functions, of course) :)

I haven't really tried recently, but when i was debugging N810, I had to use functionalities muxed on the camera pins, so I had to remove the camera and the board was still functional.
For what concerns the camera, n810 is similar to n800.
However that was 4-5 months ago, 3 HW revisions before the final and anyway i was testing low level functionalities, so I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% functional, but there are good chanches.
Note that you might have to enable RD mode and disable lifeguard reboots (try this if it reboots while booting).
