Osso-xterm character encoding..
 

Hi!

I was wondering on how to switch the character encoding in IT OS 2008 osso-xterm? When I try to ssh to non-UTF8 server the foreign characters (scandinavian ones in particular) are all squares.

Did you solve this problem? I have now exactly this problem. I tried to remove the Encoding line in the desktop parameter file for osso-xterm but it did not work (do I have to reboot for this to take effect?).

Hi!

There is a little progress on this. I have contacted Urho Konttori, the author of osso-xterm, to add a menu that can change character set on the fly. I havent tried to modify the .desktop file yet, gotta try that now.

It is not just the character set that has to be changed. What is sent when you press the keys (e.g. åäö) has to be changed also.

I did not manage to set Encoding to something that worked. And I have run out of ideas. This is very annoing since I am reading my emails usning emacs running in a screen and not having working åäö is not acceptable.

Don't worry, I bet they have that fixed in the coming OS2008 version. I sure hope so, since my irssi session always looks terrible on finnish channel :)

Got the same problem...irssi displays scandinavian characters oddly. Anyhow i think this was working in previous OS2007 when xterm was not built-in. At least don't remember having any probs with irssi.

I'll try to hack something up today, ie. a hacked version of osso-xterm.

By doing

(set-terminal-coding-system 'utf-8) ;; for N810
(set-keyboard-coding-system 'utf-8) ;; for N810

in my emacs I got the Swedish characters to work properly.

LocusF or Urho, any progress with this one? This bug annoys a lot or maybe it's just a matter of configuration...anyways it was working out-of-the-box with advanced osso-xterm.
