Portrait mode for Mapper
 

Can anyone tell me if Maemo Mapper will operate in portrait mode? I haven't received my N800 yet and I can't find any documentation on the program and am impatient!
I have always thought that GPS screens in landscape mode was stupid. I don't care what's off to the sides, I want to know what's in front of me! The original Garmin Streetpilot could be used in either mode, but I haven't seen any other models since that will.
If not, does any other GPS software do this? I know the N800 doesn't have a rotate function, but it can be done in software like the PDF reader.

You can rotate the screen whatever direction you want, so you could be traveling up the screen or accross the screen.

This is what your asking right?

If you mean can you mount the Tablet vertically (Portrait) such that you have more road ahead and less on either side of you, in auto-rotate mode, then NO MM cannot currently do this as it expects the direction you are heading to be at the top of the device when set to auto-rotate of maps. (i.e. Widescreen of device = Landscape)

However as you can operate with static "North is Up" where you then move on map and the map moves with you "from a fixed North perspective" in Landscape mode, then would this not cover your needs when you need to see more map in relation to overall direction you are heading?

What would be the the point of seeing more in front with almost nothing at the sides, other than to give you a better view of what lay immediately ahead.

Actually, you're wrong here, at least with Maemo Mapper v2.x. In the "Auto-Center" tab of the Settings dialog, you can specify which direction the auto-center (and auto-rotate) will orient itself. For example, if you specify "Right", then you will get a "Portrait"-like map display, where your heading always points "right" (which is up if you rotate the device 90 degrees counter-clockwise).

Unfortunately, the menus and text panels don't work in portrait mode, but the map itself can work exactly as you described it ("more road ahead and less on either side of you").

Thought I might get corrected, did not have NIT with me when I wrote post, oh well...thanks for clarifying, I am not worthy o MM master ;)
