External speakers?
 

Does the 810 need a special plug/lead to hook it up to external speakers? Looking at the earpiece plug it appears to be an odd beast - will a standard 3.5mm jack work?

Odd beast? It's a standard 3.5mm input which has a 3rd wire for mic. You can plug any 3.5mm peripheral into it an it'll work fine.
