Try 7-zip

I spent the evening packaging up the Posix port of 7-zip for Maemo OS 2007. 7-zip is the LGPLed archive utility that supports a wide variety of formats (7z, zip, tar, gzip, bzip2 and some others)

I requested an account on Maemo.org, but until that comes through you can try it out by downloading it from here:

http://download.yousendit.com/F54098BD774B52AA
(if you're surfing on your maemo, the download link is to the right of the file name).

I still have to tidy up the package a little, but it works on my N800. But as usual, INSTALL AT YOUR OWN RISK. Full source and binaries will be available when the project is approved (but you can always grab the source at 7-zip.org in the meantime and I can send you a patch to compile in maemo if need be).

The binary is 7za and it is command line only (i.e. you need to install a terminal program to use it). Typing 7za gives a full help list. You can find html docs at /usr/share/doc etc...

Bugs/advice/comments welcome. I'll think about the GUI version in the future.

Very good idea, I use this software very often.
Cool!!

I'll try it.

Re: Try 7-zip (Command Line Only)

i imagine it will be trivial to also create an OS2008 package using the same modified 7-zip source. How many people are using OS2008?

Free: let me know how you get on.

Re: Try 7-zip (Command Line Only)

Ooops I already had it
:)
Code:

/home/user # dpkg -i 7zip-maemo_4.55.0-1_armel.deb
Selecting previously deselected package 7zip-maemo.
(Reading database ... 24847 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking 7zip-maemo (from 7zip-maemo_4.55.0-1_armel.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing 7zip-maemo_4.55.0-1_armel.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/7za', which is also in package p7zip
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Errors were encountered while processing:
 7zip-maemo_4.55.0-1_armel.deb
/home/user # apt-cache policy p7zip
p7zip:
  Installed: 4.55
  Candidate: 4.55
  Version table:
 *** 4.55 0
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

So you did the job that somebody else did. Sorry for the bad news..

I had forgotten I already had it. Doing too many things in parallel..

Now where I got it is a good question..

Re: Try 7-zip (Command Line Only)

7zip supports RAR as well, right?

Re: Try 7-zip (Command Line Only)

found it: http://garage.maemo.org/projects/p7zip/

don't know why I missed it in my first search. Anyway, the packaging was good practice. I note that I can't find the sources for that project anywhere (seems to be all too common on maemo.org, someone needs their butt kicked on this)

Re: Try 7-zip (Command Line Only)

it does support rar, but I didn't build it in my package (its probably in the p7zip maemo garage package though)

Anyway, SORRY FOR ALL THE NOISE

Yep I agree.
Although the only package I've made public haven't yet made public the sources, so I'm no better. But it's on my short todo-list.

I've an idea for you:

http://packages.debian.org/lenny/unp

I use it everyday on my pc.
Why not porting that?
I don't know at all how unp works but I guess it should be feasible to port.

edit:
hum unp is perl.. then there's nothing to do.. wrong idea..

Re: Try 7-zip (Command Line Only)

Another question: when you installed p7zip did it claim to need 405 MB? (it's a 1mb download or thereabouts)
