[Palm OS] Garnet vm no longer available for n810?
is anyone able to tell me where to get the garnet vm for the n810/it2008? it no longer appears to be available from palm...
i can register and receive the download link, but the file isn't actually there to download... i can still get the n800 version, but that won't install on os2008. :-( |
Re: Garnet vm no longer available for n810?
I think they were expecting to do another release in December. Perhaps it's in pep for that.
Then again, can't see any significant release till new year to be honest... Zuber |

FWIW, I just downloaded it not 5 seconds ago. I finally did the OS2008 update and needed to reinstall it anyway. Go try it again :D Also, note that when you click on the link in the email that they send you, you'll first need to accept the license agreement and then you can download the deb.

Re: Garnet vm no longer available for n810?
I'm not sure about the rights to the PalmOS name (Palm is different I'm sure - as PalmOne renamed itself to Palm when Access bought PalmSource). However, Palm kept the rights to keep using the current Garnet (PalmOS 5.4).
You're right about Access' plans though. There's an SDK out there and all. The problem is, will any hardware maker license ALP (Access Linux Platform) from Access? It may be that Palm itself won't be a customer, as they've been working on their own Linux kernel-based PalmOS. But as they (Palm) seems incapable of getting anything right these days that effort probably ends up in nothing. We'll see. In any case I think Access' Garnet VM effort is applaudable. |
Re: Garnet vm no longer available for n810?
IIRC, Palm became PalmOne, and then became Palm again. This is the hardware company. PalmSource, the software division, became Access. This company has al the rights to PalmOS. However, Palm, the hardware company, purchased the rights for Garnet, and is allowed to make whatever changes they want to it. That's the only software Palm has now. Palm has produced devices using both Garnet and Windows Mobile, and may produce devices running something else eventually. I've lost interest in Palm products, though, because they're so far behind the times. Garnet is a dead end, because it doesn't allow multi-tasking or several other things necessary in modern devices. Palm was by far the best PDA for many years, and I loved them, but that's no longer the case.
