Processing Power
 

Hello everyone!

I'm an existing 770 owner and am thinking about upgrading to the N810. The main reason I want to upgrade is I have the following problems, but before I splash the cash, I'd like to know if these have been improved:

1) Reading PDFs: I want a portable device for reading academic papers on, but I found the 770 just a little underpowered for this. PDFs would take ages to load, and then once I'd zoomed in to a readable level, after reading half a page, would stall for a minute or so as I tried to scroll the page down. I'm a bad enough reader as it is, and having that much of a delay every half a page really disrupted my flow!

2) Web browsing could be a little slow, would often stop the entire device from responding and half the time just reboot the machine. Now I'm aware I cannot have too many windows open at one time, but I'll sometimes get carried away and it'll be fine. Then all of a sudden one page will be too hard to render and the whole machine will reboot. Most annoying is when I'm on a VOIP call, with only one browser window open and the whole machine resets!

3) The Application Manager is pretty great, however, occasionally it'll spend ages downloading and beginning to install an application, and then suddenly say "Cannot install" with no explanation! Not so much of a problem, but I thought only having 2 problems with the 770 seemed lame! ;-)


Basically, I'm wondering if the processor (which is less than twice the clock speed of the 770) and increased RAM does enough to make the N810 significantly more usable than the 770? Do heavy PDFs open quicker? Does the machine avoid resetting every time you have more than one browser window open?

N810 is a little heavy on the price for very little feature delivery, I'd get an N800 instead, and, yes, the N8x0 series device are so much better than the 770 (I've owner a 770 since 2005 :)).

Data point on PDF reading on N810:
111 Mb PDF file (about 1,100 pages) - 10 seconds to load, 3 to 5 seconds to jump around, max
I don't know what you mean by a "heavy pdf".
You might like the built in kb, but don't get it for the GPS.
