Nokia and CES 2008
Greetings:
I recently read that at the 2008 CES show, Intel's Menlow CPU will be intergrated into new MID's. Battery life will go from 3 hours to 6 hours. How will Nokia compete with these new MID's and extended battery life? I hope Nokia will develop an MID or Tablet that will have a longer battery life. Anyone else has heard of any news as if Nokia will try to improve battery life? Regards Robert |
Re: Nokia and CES 2008
They can do anything, they are a phone company, drop a modem into a n820 and it would sell more than the iphone.
As to your question maybe not this time they just released the n810 so its too soon. |
Re: Nokia and CES 2008
Uh, it's called OMAP3430.

I hope future Nokia tablets have a longer battery life. I just got a Nintendo DS, and I'm amazed how long its battery lasts. :)

Re: Nokia and CES 2008
A recent article on Ars Technica suggests that the Intel 45nm low-power Silverthorne CPU (as used in the Menlow platform) "will be clock-for-clock slower and less efficient than a comparable ARM part, especially on integer-intensive Web and productivity apps".
In order to be performance competive with ARM, Intel clock speeds may have to approach 1Ghz level or higher which will probably increase power requirements resulting in quite heavy devices if a 6 hour lifetime is going to be realistic. Obviously this is just speculation, but it will be interesting to see how the real devices perform and what they look like - the form factor may be much larger than what we are used to with Nokia devices which could be a deal breaker for some people. And to match a Nokia form factor, the devices may not run for anything like as long. Or Intel could pull a rabbit out of the hat and beat Nokia/ARM every which way. :) |

So much has happened in the meantime, that my bets are on the rabbits and hats. Next week should be interesting. |
Re: Nokia and CES 2008
At least Intel-based MIDs will have PowerVR support from day-one, judging by the PowerVR related bugs being reported in the Moblin Bugzilla. :(
