Skype Install breaks App Manager

OK - next problem.

When I install skype - it will not work and it breaks my app manager. The install goes through fine and skype seems to be installed - but at the very end of the install process the app manager flashes up a box that says Operation Failed. Now when I try to access any app manager function all it says is Operation Failed. When I try to open Skype a box comes up that says Skype-Loading but it never loads. The only way I've been able to fix the manager is to reflash - I've never been able to install Skype.

At this point I do not have root access as I forgot to install it before the app manager broke.

What am I doing wrong?
