device name

hi all,

trying to identify my N810 on the net I found that it has no device name, no nodename, so only the MAC address appears at the status pages of the router and on other network tools.
Then I visited almost every menu I could think of in my N810, but I couldn't find where to give it a name. So right now my N810 goes "unchristened" happily connecting to any wifi spot and getting killed on most of them because it appears to be a stealth device.

Does anybody know how can I give my N810 a name ?

TIA

Garfi

Re: device name

The OS asks for the Device name when you do the initial setup. I think you can edit /etc/hostname to do it after the fact. There might be a simpler way.

EDIT 1 - removed.

EDIT 2 - removed my first edit, as Brendan pointed out that the file to change is in fact /etc/hostname. Second guesses are usually wrong. Thank you.

Re: device name

/etc/hosts is the file that contains hostnames to IPs you set, so it doesnt have to check DNS. /etc/hostname is the file to change if you want to change the name of the device. hostname <newhostname> will change the hostname temporarily. for some reason the /etc/hostname file is not updated by that command.

Re: device name

done it ! Thank you both !

But still there's something I don't get: when I connect through my router the device list on the admin pages of the router shows the N810 by its IP without a name associated, while all other devices (laptop, desktop, nas, psp, etc) have both an IP and a name.

What am I doing wrong ?

Re: device name

Not sure. You can probably name the device yourself in the router's admin page.

Re: device name

I would assume the OS2008 does not send a name when requesting a DHCP address.
My DHCP server log seems to suggest so as i can see a name with other systems but
not from the OS2008.
