Endless rebooting by Application install / upgrade

It seems I just managed to wedge my N810 by installing / updating some software. The symptoms are:

N810 boots (the Nokia logo with the blue progress bar appears), then it asks to enter the lock code. I enter the lock code, then the Nokia logo comes on again and after a couple of seconds, the LEDs start to light up and then the tablet reboots. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I guess something is borked in the startup sequence of applications -- is there a way to do some kind of "safe boot", where it doesn't try to start any user installed apps or is the only way to get out of this a re-flash?

Cheers,

mjl

The same thing just happened to me.
I had just install the latest update for Modest, the only other thing I can think is that this bug, although it says it is fixed for Chinook might still exist: I did add a new RSS feed today.

Oh well, I've just reflashed and I'm in the process of reinstalling applications (but I'll leave Modest off the system for a day or two i ncase that was the problem).

Re: Endless rebooting by Application install / upgrade

I don't have Modest and don't use the RSS applet either, I suspect it's the rtcomm update or the osso-something-idle irc plugin, but that's just a guess.

So reflashing makes it happy again?

Dang, I won't come home for another two weeks and while there's no shortage of PCs, those micro-USB fubs are as rare as kiwis.

It might be those. I did let something update earlier today, but I can't remember what it was. Perhaps someone else will have the same problem and we can get a better idea.

Which country/city are you in? Maybe there will be someone else on this board close enough to lend you a cable.

Meanwhile, advice for anyone else reading this thread: backup your system before updating any software. There could be something nasty lurking out there.

I am pretty sure it is as a experienced exactly the same today and came to exactly the same conclusion:

P.S.: I had a kiwi as dessert ... don't tell me i have caused a shortage ...

This sounds like the software watchdog resetting your tablet due to something critical crashing. There is a switch to turn off the watchdog using the flasher so you can maybe get to the desktop to attempt a repair. Unfortunately, it requires the same cable/process as you use to reflash your firmware. So if you don't have the cable handy, you are SOL.

Right, that's my suspicion as well.

The check list for my next travels has that @(*&#$# cable at the top...

I installed UKMP, it worked for a while then just froze, after re-booting I get the blue progress bar, then it stops almost 75% of the way and starts over again. Can someone help me fix this problem? I've seen people say they've re-flashed... since I cannot get passed the boot ... how do I do this?
Thanks in advanced for all your help

You don't have to get past the boot to re-flash. With the tablet switched off, connect it to your PC with the USB cable, then turn it on while holding down the swap key. A USB icon should appear top-right on the screen, and the tablet won't attempt to boot.

Thanks Duncan,

I tried it and it worked like a charm... although me being the stubborn one went back and reloaded UKMP and whala.. crash! In process of re-flashing AGAIN.. I am wondering if I need to install something else BEFORE I can use this program.

Anyway thanks for your help...:)
