OS2008: a step back from OS2007
 

I've got my N800 for over half a year now and I must tell I have been extremely satisfied with it - until I updated to OS2008. Here's why:

1. The Internet browser is more sluggish than in the OS2007
2. The browser tends to hang the unit more often than in the OS2007
3. I cannot pair my SU-8W bluetooth keyboard anymore -it just doesn't work
4. Navicore Personal navigation software does not work anymore
5. I lost all my internet radio bookmarks from Mplayer

So, I'll be switching back to OS2007 and keeping it until those bugs are fixed. I like to use the keyboard and yes, the navigation is handy when getting to new places. Or, if there are simple workarounds from people who already have solved those problems, I might consider using the OS2008. For now there are just too many cons and too few pros to keep the newest OS.

hey man. I can't really speak to 1-2, as I find the browser to be much quicker (and better at rendering most sites).

The Navicore navigation, well, OS2008 has a new mapping software (provided by Wayfinder, I believe) built-into the OS. There is a handy map downloader feature built-in as well, and you *should* be able to use your Navicore license key on it, though I'm not 100% familiar with that, since I don't use my Tablet for navigation quite yet.

Another cool feature on OS2008 is that they've added an Internet Radio directory to the default media player. You can browse a huge library and add them to your favorites. You can also create a backup file with just your settings and documents (no applications) and restore it in OS2008, and you should then have your existing internet radio bookmarks intact.

I can confirm that.

I've had Navicore on OS2007. Moving to OS2008, I simply entered my Navicore serial into the map software.

Wayfinder is Navicore. They bought Navicore and the Wayfinder software preinstalled on OS 2008 simply is the latest version of Navicore. Your Navicore license key unlocks the navigation features, so you have the latest Navicore.

One should not switch to OS2008 just for the purpose of switching. There must be a compelling reason to switch (read: some piece of software which you really need).

I tried OS2008 for a day, and switched back to OS2007, which had all the apps I needed such as a text editor for editing large files - leafpad, the ability to use Opera (which I like), and simple IP over bluetooth with pand.

One day OS2008 will have all the apps I need, and then I'll switch. Until then, there is nothing wrong with using OS2007 on the n800 (for me, at least).

I think the overclock and better power management are good reasons to switch...

P.S. Since today there is leafpad for OS2008.

my su8w works fine with my n800 running os2008. not sure why you're having problems.

Since I received my N800 on January 7th, I have reflashed it with OS 2007/2008 about a dozen times.

Applications like SciTE (with onboard keyboard support), Camera (with video recording), Abiword (with onboard keyboard support), locking the desktop applets in place, dictionary word completion in Terminal, the desktop RSS Feeder showing more text when an article is clicked once, etc. makes me want OS 2007 installed.

The latest Evince (which can read DJVU, has special mode, etc.), the nicer theme with translucent desktop, better video playback, etc. makes me want OS 2008 installed.

I've thought about buying a second N800 or even a N810 so I can use each OS and not waste hours reinstalling software after each reflash on my N800.

+1 (that's what i did; i have an os2007 unit customized like a fit like a glove, but also an os2008 unit to test software, find new apps)...

- it's a shame that the default architecture and system releases must be installed on internal memory...

- it would be much nicer to simply swap cards for an os change...

(i know, you can do this now - but what i would like would be a simpler card swap instead of partitioning, formatting, installing, etc.)

- ah well... life is still good w/my n800s! i haven't had this much fun w/a pda/tablet/os in a long time...
