I have an Axis print server that lets me print text files via FTP. Penguinbait has made it possible to print to network printers via CUPS. |

- this deserves more exploration - i'd like to know how to set up an FTP print server on one of my Linux boxen - this will serve as a printing solution for now... - tks for posting this! |

- one possible solution that came to mind, which i'll try sometime tomorrow, is to set up an every minute crontab to run a script that parses a remote FTP or Share directory for any new file and that will then use lpr to print the file, then clear out the directory (i'm not worried about multiple users)... - this way i can print *any* type of 'sane' file from my n800 (i.e., a txt, pdf, html, jpg, or doc, not an mp3 or avi, etc) - plus, a simple gui on the n800 can be used to send the file - all without the overhead and need for a 'local' (on the n800) printing subsystem! - waddya think? |
Re: i wanna print
Just try to connect to your printer with ftp protocol and then send the files.
I used to do this in my company to bypass windows quota. It was a quite standard printer. |
Re: i wanna print
I like linux_author's solution. I'll try it too when I'm home, shouldn't be that hard.

http://www.cups.org/documentation.php/network.html - perhaps i'm missing something or require a specialized server, or have to depend on the network-attached printer's firmware? |
Re: i wanna print
this all sounds so interesting....
but i am not a linux programmer... also i prefer a mobile printing solution....the typical thing i might want is to print a hotel reservation i did online while travelling or something like that... so far my easiest low tech idea seems to be save the web page i am reading to the sd card, and then plug the n800 into a pc. the pc will see the files on the memory card, and i can print them from the pc... another low tech idea would be to email n800 files to myself, and print them from my email program... also i downloaded webhttrack... it should save web pages to my n800, which i could then also keep for reference or printing, but i havent tried it yet... |
