3G on N800
 

in the future is there a chance that instead of Wi-fi hotspots, there'll be 3G hotspots?

and in more current news, Will 802.11N replace the dominance of G? i've seen a lotta new lappys with N support - or WiMAX perhaps?

i think there should be a mass movement within this forum, for someone SOMEBODY to develop a USB-in connector - either via external device, or something - that will allow us to do somethings like adding 3G Wireless adapters (if that becomes standard) ,and adding Wireless-N or wimax support (also, if that becomes standard)

seriously though, USB in would open SO many new doors. USB host, and video out may actually become a reality if someone perfects this theoretical USB in device.

But in a way he did answer your question. 3G is a label for cellular packet data. There is no simply need at all for a "3G hotspot"; anywhere you have cellular data you would have 3G coverage (provided your carrier offered such a service). In effect, the whole country is a hotspot.

802.11n is the next revision up from 802.11g, so yes, N will replace G in time just as G replaced 802.11b. The key is interoperability (i.e. why 802.11a failed to gain much traction at all as it was not interoperable with other standards as it operated at 5.8 Ghz instead of 2.4 Ghz). It's hardly a new thing. Old modem technologies always eventually superseded previous standards, and it took years for 802.11g to supplant 802.11b (I was running a B network back in ... 1999?).

WiMAX will see only limited support at the integrated hardware level as it is reliant on a carrier/provider/ISP of some sort to give you WiMAX service. I would never buy a laptop that required me to sign up with Company XYZ's WiMAX service to utilize hardware someone felt like shoving in my laptop. It has it's uses in devices like the OQO, but you don't see those flying off store shelves. Demand isn't there for such an expensive, locked in product. I don't even know if I'd want WiMAX as my at home internet service.

The need for a USB interface to connect to an adapter to connect to another service is a bit redundant. If you already carry a 3G cell phone, both devices are already fully equipped and capable of connecting over Bluetooth. Yes, eventually Bluetooth will become the bottleneck (if it isn't already) and we'll crave something faster, but by then these devices will have evolved well past their current iteration and likely have all of those things you want.

I know alot of people including me (now-a-days) that dont have bluetooth on their phone but are able to connect from phone to pc with a data cord.
Would be nice for me when I'm on the go and not to purchase another phone as mine is just fine without bluetooth.
I'm sure in the future all phones will be equipped with bluetooth or something faster but for now id like to see if this would work with the n800 i'm purchasing soon!

Should work, if your phone can be tethered in Linux with an open-source driver; I don't know of any cases where anyone's tried this, but it should work on the N8x0 (possibly with new kernel modules).

What is "a USB-in connector"? I understand it's a theoretical device. But no-one I know uses that term, so we don't know what in the world you mean by it...

I recently tethered my HTC Mogul (Sprint) to my N800 through WiFi. There is a way to hack the Mogul so that it acts as a router and accepts incoming connections from multiple sources, bridges them to the EVDO-Rev A radio and out to the internet. It's just an ad hoc Wifi connection just like Bluetooth, but obviously it's not Bluetooth.

Google "WMWifirouter" or "Windows Mobile Wifi Router" which works on a few different types of WM phones.

I was actually able to put the Mogul in my work bag, connection the N800 to it with Wifi, and stream Internet radio while driving at 60 MPH on a bus. Not one single hiccup.

Thats cool. Was it infact adhoc mode? Hope to see more ppl connecting without bluetooth just to see the results.:)
