New N800: Power jack broken, "extra?" memory card, and service?

Hi, I just got my N800 for my birthday Friday morning, and awesome as it is, I've ran into two hiccups.

Power Jack / Charger:: The initial charge went just fine, allowing me to get several hours of browsing usage out of my tablet. The second and each subsequent time I've tried to plug in the charger, however- the plug hasn't gone all of the way in, leaving one or two millimeters of exposed metal between the rubber plug and the N800 power jack. Since then, I haven't been able to charge my tablet.

That "other" memory card: I inserted the SD card as instructed in the little folded up user guide, and it seems to work fine. But what the heck am I supposed to do with the other card, the teeny little one? I'm at a loss. For that matter, it seems to have gone missing, and I'm not sure if I need it for some purpose.

Service: The last hangup I had before ordering my N800 was the act that I couldn't find one retail anywhere that I could actually hold. This has led to a second problem- I don't know where I can get my new gadget repaired. The Nokia website is not helping at all... any ideas? I'm in Seattle.
Please help! When my iTouch friends find out about this, I'm probably going to get unending grief.

Mine looks the same way but charges just fine. Is there a chance the tiny black plastic tip of the charger plug came off and is stuck in the n800?

Er, have you tried pushing it in?

It's just an 128MB MiniSD card they bundle with it. It's not really important, but you can put it into one of your open slots if you don't have two SD cards to fill them with.

If your n800 is like mine, the SD card that came with it is actually NOT a card, but an "Micro-SD to SD" adapter card that allows you to use the micro-SD card they provided. You put the little one in the bigger one, then the bigger one goes into one of the two SD card slots on the n800 (either internal slot or external slot). If you do that, and the device recognizes the new memory, you should be able to see the extra memory card in the "File Manager" application.

I have no idea why Nokia shipped a micro-SD card with the n800 rather than a standard SD card. Perhaps they had an overstock of the smaller cards on hand.

Additional info: The user guide indicates that you aren't supposed to leave a fully charged battery plugged into the charger, and I had been charging overnight the night before I first noticed this.

Also- it seems to work okay (other than giving me regular "battery low" alerts) while I've got the charger plugged in... so I think I've horked the battery. *sigh* Off to Radio Shack with my owners manual...

I leave my N800 plugged in a good deal of the time, and it doesn't seem to hurt the battery. Have you tried plugging in a different charger?

That's for NiMH batteries and out of date. My recommendation: charge it whenever you it's convenient, but try not to let it discharge all the way too often. There's no problem with leaving it plugged in overnight (this is what I do).

Antilles is right, I've never had a problem leaving a tablet or any other Nokia device charging overnight.

Another thing that's good is to never switch off the tablet. Switching the tablet off and on uses a lot of energy, you'll get far more battery life if you just leave it on all the time.

There's an environmental concern that a plugged-in charger may draw a small amount of current even if it's not connected to anything, but that's a separate issue.

All of Nokia's new phone models take microSD cards, so they probably just bought a job-lot of that size. I'm amazed they didn't use microSD on the N810, as it's the only new Nokia product that doesn't.

Re: New N800: Power jack broken, "extra?" memory card, and service?

Thread conclusion of grief: Having gotten ahold of 888 Nokia 2u (the toll free support number), they were perplexed, and suggested that I return the product to where I bought it (buy.com).

They did say that they could investigate for me, but the battery, charger, and software were all possible problems (the software thing suprises me) and would all be investigated in different places.

So... back to Buy.com and let's try for round 2. :)
