Commander Keen on the tablet?

1 Attachment(s)
Does anyone know this game? http://commander-keen.com/ is the website you can get the version I think was the most popular and is my favorite number 4. This is a side scroller dos game I used to play on my Dos 5 286 pc... Is this even possible to port to the tablet os? Id even PAY through paypal yes, to get someone to port this for me. Its not like super mario where you need to hold down B to run (which is essential if you're good at mario) .. This is like shoot OR jump which if you jump with the D pad button or then if there were on screen buttons as FCE with mario, that would work perfect. Again is this possible?? Any of you maemo master porters know?

Hey JFX.

There's a good chance that it might be able to run quite well already using ArnimS's version of Dosbox for the N8x0.

http://pupnik.de/dosbox.html

I'm looking at upgrading to the 2008 OS version if I have the time later tonight.

I'll try to see how well it works if I do so and will post back any feedback on this. :)

Yeah, it definitely can be a little tough on a newcomer.

But sure, I'll give it a try in just a few minutes and will post back here shortly.

Commander Keen 1 works great in DoxBox in OS2008! I'm crossing my fingers that Addison sees Keen 4 working smooth as well.

Re: Commander Keen on the tablet?

Another thing, why aren't there more great games out there stable for these tablets? I have an older XDA O2 pda and it plays games like king of fighters, mortal kombat, action games like that fine, it's got essentially lower specs than my N800.. I'm not that educated on these things but its seems they should have millions of stable running fast running games so far, but then again these are new aren't they, that must be it.. More the merrier.

Re: Commander Keen on the tablet?

Yeah, I got all three running just fine, not too sure if getting proper sound emulation is possible though.

Also, you probably need to remap the hard keys on your Nokia since Xkbd wasn't being all to friendly with jumping and shooting.

Hey Pushwall. Any chance you could post your dosbox.conf file on this?

It might help me to figure a few things out on how to better optimize the option settings.

And JFX, this is really only an internet tablet. Everything else that you're seeing that's being released around these parts are by people who put in the time.

I think the slow speed is because no one has quite figured out the ARM processor yet (?) It might not ever happen, so if you're just looking for some portable gaming, you're best off looking at something else for the time being.

Re: Commander Keen on the tablet?

Yeah, I've got the N800 version, still running old school though with the Nokia's 2007 OS build. I really should upgrade to this year, just too many worries on my behalf for some stupid reason.

I'm probably the worst person to ask around here, but for me, make sure that you also grab the dependency to run Dosbox (it's kind of like the driver to make it work)

http://pupnik.de/deps/libsdl-net1.2_...armel_bora.deb

Then grab Dosbox and unzip it.

http://pupnik.de/dosbox_N8x0.tgz

Also pick up the dosbox.conf file.

http://pupnik.de/dosbox.conf

I transfer all of this junk right on my memory card.

Click on the libsdl file and have it install.
Then Dosbox.
Just say okay for everything and don't try to change any of the default locations on where it wants to be installed.

If you did it correctly, it should create a icon thing in the Extras option on your Nokia. I have no idea why you're not seeing it. After that, I delete these two files off of my memory card as there's no need for them again.

The way I use the dosbox.conf file is by leaving it right on my memory card.

So it's like...
j:dosbox.conf (internal memory card)

To transfer this inside your Nokia for Dosbox to read it correctly.

Using Xterm, type:
cp /media/mmc2/dosbox.conf /home/user/.dosboxrc

From there, all you should need to do is click on Extras, then Dosbox and the game or program of your choice should start running all happy and stuff. :)

If none of this is working for you, keep asking around, I'm sure there's someone else here that could problem solve your troubles.

Cheers.
