After apt-get update ... reboot, reboot, reboot ...

My apologies if this is discussed elsewhere.

After doing a sudo gainroot/apt-get update and restarting, my N800 running OS 2008 gets past the "hands" start screen before the screen goes white for a few seconds and the N800 reboots. Then it gets past the "hands" start screen before the screen goes white for a few seconds and the N800 reboots... over and over. :(

The only cure is a reflash?

i think you did upgrade not update ;)
which is not officially supported.. i think the problem is that it can pull stuffs aimed at scratchbox. Like redpill, dangerous..
Somebody corrects me if I'm wrong

Whoops, I'm half asleep. You are right I did an apt-get upgrade. Thanks.

I'm about to reflash. Just spending a few minutes to debate whether OS 2007 or OS 2008 this time.

OS2008 is much quicker. Better to have a quicker OS and maybe a few missing apps than running one quick app on a slow OS?
Unless OS2008 has critical bugs for you.

I flashed with OS 2008 mainly for the speed and all the new apps coming out. Plus 2008's Application Manager allows "Restore applications..." when used with Backup to install all previously installed programs located in repositories.

The main thing I miss with OS 2008 is the ability to record video like the camera-video app for 2007 can do.

As a debian user, it's what I did 30mn after having bought my n800 lol.
I learnt very quickly how to reflash :)

I remember this nice long progressbar going till the end, hearing this nice nokia tunes and then .. nothing.. typical..

Among 10 upgraded packages there was 1 buggy (I think gtk) and this was clearly a problem in this package which was not aimed at scratchbox. I think you pull experimental stuffs. It may or may not work.. It's like russian roulette :)
The fact that the boot process is so picky and doesn't leave you to a shell is the problem.. but it's an internet tablet afterall.. I would really like to know if it's possible to boot in two stages:
arrive in a shell
launch the rest of the process. I'm not asking for kdm or startx :) simply a pause to a shell and then finish the bootup manually.

Ah I didn't know this existed, quite handy!
