Replace the case with a microfiber eyeglass bag
 

I was at a store looking at the racks of sunglasses and magnifier lenses and saw a very inexpensive ($4) microfiber pouch designed for eyeglasses. It was a bit larger than my n810 or n800 so I decided to try it. It holds the n810 and I can keep the screen clean. It also adds practically no bulk, but wouldn't help with a drop or something with enough force, but the microfiber is thick enough to prevent things from scratching the screen, and thin enough to clean it even in the corners.

It may not last a long time, but I can always buy another if it gets torn and there may be a way to adjust it (attach some thin but tough plastic to the outside) to make it a bit more protective.

I use an oakley glasses bag, because I'm pretentious, and it is almost the perfect size and works really well. They can be found on ebay for around £5-6. They tend to last really well too, I've still got the original from my first pair of oakleys I got about 10 years ago.

I bought two of these for my two n800s and am very pleased with them:

It is almost perfect for n800, should be perfect for the smaller n810.

just about any case made for the nintendo ds works well for an n800, I re-purposed one from my son as soon as I got the n800, I use the pouch thingy that came with it inside, it also has a pouch on the back that hold a pair of ear buds, a few sd cards and a small usb ->sd adapter for easy transfers, the DS case also has a small pouch which has a microfiber cloth stitched in it that dangles from the side, and a belt loop, there are TONS of different cases for this popular "toy" that fit the n800 & 770 well... You can find them in tons of stores as well as online

the beauty of the microfibre cases is that they add almost zero bulk though. I've also got the proporta alu-leather case, and it's really nice, but quite bulky. I always carry my n800 in a (man-)bag anyway so I just wanted to protect the screen from scratches, which an oakley (or similar) case will do well.

I prefer hard case, a lesson learned after dropping my n800 a few times.
