Idea: Access tablet apps via local PC browser.

Idunno if this has been done before or discussed before.
This just kinda popped into my head a little bit ago.

I know we have ssh and VNC, but what about allowing maemo apps to run mini webservers on the tablet that allow me to access it from a local network pc?

Say, if I want to put together a shopping checklist from my full-size pc to take with me, I can enable 'web access' on my checklist app, it'll give me it's local address like http://192.168.1.x/checklist, a random password, and then I can log in from a browser, and add list entries without having to spend five minutes typing them into the thumbboard or swapping files.

This would be useful for accessing bookmarks, contacts, the email client, password managers, etc.

Just something I thought I'd throw out there.

So what you're looking for is something like Nokia Beta Labs' Mobile Web Server, but for Maemo instead of S60?

I gave this a try on my E61i and it was pretty neat as a proof of concept sort of thing. Not sure if I'd want to run this all the time (or even at all), but I believe it does what you are asking for. One of things that makes this concept work on S60 and not on the N8x0 potentially is the fact that there are a standard set of services and databases in S60 which the MWS is working with. Maemo would be a bit of a 'wild wild west' in that regard. There are a few standard apps, but would that really be enough for what you want to do?

Yeah. Pretty much.

I did something like that some years ago on my Zaurus, with a small app I used to record my expenses on the move. Only I did it even simpler : the app *was* a Web app, running inside the bowser on the Z (127.0.0.1). When I needed to access it from "outside" (ie exporting the data to my PC) there was nothing special to do...

Have a look at AndLinux, you would have to tweak it to connect to the N8x0 instead of a locally install kernel via a virtual network.

This repository (click to add) has Apache2 compiled for the tablets (chinook/os2008), though I haven't tried it myself. I found it on www.gronmayer.com/it/ which is considered a reputable source of repositories on this forum.

VNC does this on the PC, it uses its own web server, which just serves up a simple page with a java applet. I think that functionality is removed from the N800 version, but you could grab the page and applet from a PC install, and serve them with Apache or thttpd. It should work... as long as the PC has a JRE, so no hot tablet-on-tablet action here.

I'm not sure how that would help. What protocol are you suggesting between N8x0 and the coLinux system?
