[KDE] Opening .xls Spreadsheet Chokes and Pukes

I'm still learning...

now its opening an excel spreadsheet from the mmc1 storage... I use the open file on the drop down menu which pops open the file selection dialogue box just like normal - but when I click on a .xls the program clears the dialogue box and locks up the program... Do I have to pre-set anything to open existing .xls files?

your thoughts?

xls files are not supported in Kspread. You may be able to import the file though.

It's not a perfect solution but I know you can open OpenOffice spreadsheets in KSpread. You might be able to open the Excel doc in OOo and then save it to .ods and that should open just fine in KSpread. However, depending on what version of Excel the .xls was originally created, OOo just might have a hard time opening it too - I think Microsoft did something ugly with the latest versions of Excel so that nothing but Excel will open .xls properly.
