two basic questions

a) power supply, AC and car included in the original package? what kind of plug goes into the device? voltage/power requirements?

b) nokia says 2*2Gb max of SD memory. I see people selling them used with 8Gb SDHC cards? What gives?

Re: two basic questions

1. I think there was a car power connector included, I'm not sure. It charges by plugging into a wall unit. As I understand it, European power is fine -- I'm in the US, but Nokia isn't! My advice is that you buy a cheap battery charger and some extra cheap tatteries just for your convenience.

2. There is virtually no limit on the size of sdhc cards. Some people here are using 16 gb cards. The main limit is how much money is in your wallet, and how much you are prepared to risk if your sdhc card gets corrupted. It's a rare problem now, but could be expensive.

Re: two basic questions

directore,

1)
The N800 comes with a Nokia 5V/890mAh 100-240V 50/60Hz charger (a standard phone charger, not the smallest type). The charger plug is of the new, thin ones that Nokia uses for all their newer phones.

No car charger included, but Nokia and others sell them almost everywhere. (I think there was a car charger included in the N800+navigation kit combo though).

2)
The very first versions of the N800 operating system didn't have support for SDHC, so 2GB was the limit (although non-SDHC 4GB cards would work too). That was never a problem in real life though, as certain members of this forum quickly put together a modified kernel with SDHC support included. That lifted the 2GB limit altogether. Nokia provided "official" SDHC support in an upgrade many months ago, and SDHC support has been with us during the later upgrades. I think you can buy 32GB now, or soon, but in principle you can install a 2TB card if just someone will make one.

Re: two basic questions

the supplied charger is the AC-4 5V as noted. uses the new standard Nokia 2mm plug. Nokia list the CA-44 adaptor cable under the n800, so it may be that it's ok to use the older >5V chargers, too. I also use the USB CA-100 cable to plug into a USB socket (but it's slow).

The car charger is the DC-4. Is not included in the UK n800 pkg, but is included with the LD-3W, & LD-4W GPS podules. These are great: I just got the LD-4W, and it works with my n800, my Nokia E61i phone, and my Ubuntu laptop (using gpsd).
