The GPS is free, the map software is free, but if you want to unlock route navigation features, you'll have to pay.

Using the GPS is free. The Wayfinder mapping software has a charge to do routing. It can show you where you are for free.

There are also other programs that can be used for free to find your location or with an internect connection do free routing also. Maemo Mapper is probably the most popular.

Yes on POIs-

Stuff like Wifi access points, airports, gas stations, etc. I have no idea how stuff ends up as a poi, but my local library was listed as a WiFi access point which impressed me.

Maemo Mapper, which is available for free on the N810, does give voice guided directions for free.

I feel obligated to caveat this by saying that many people do not consider the robotic sound of those voice-guided directions to be aesthetically pleasing. It works for me, though.

(Maemo Mapper uses flite, which is an embedded version of Festival, a free-and-open-source text-to-voice software package.)

My Magellan Maestro has a somewhat pleasing voice, but that voice can't give me street names. The robotic voice on my Palm, powered by Mapopolis, does give me street names. I have no idea what Maemo Mapper sounds like, because the volume is so low I can't hear it, even connected to my car speakers. This is probably a problem with flite, or maybe with the N800 itself, but I simply can't make it loud enough to hear. I don't really mind it that much, though, because I'm just using MM as a backup, for the maps. The Magellan's maps, and the view they show, simply aren't readable. The routing is excellent, though, and it doesn't require an internet connection, ever. TAANSTAFL.

I'm finding that the Wayfinder maps on the Nav Kit for the 800, are pretty lacking--there is no text to speech, and the POI are way outdated and randomly presented. OH well.

Im thinking of buying the n810 but this is the only thing I dont like about it. I dont understand how the maemo mapper cant have rerouting if its all done clientside without any internet connection. When the subscription is turned on for the wayfinder maps is it just a key or something? It is all client side is it not?
