Can't connect to my LAN
 

Guys I need help. I have searched the forums but cant find a solution.

I just got a used 770 off of Ebay. The first thing I did was update the OS to the latest version. My problem is with trying to make a Wi Fi connection.

When I scan for networks the 770 sees my router but after selecting it as my preferred connection and starting up the browser I get an error message "Network Probelm" followed by the url I typed in. Also I am only getting one bar signal strength no matter how close I am to the router.

Anybody run into the same situation?

Also on the Connection manager page the signal, received, sent, and duration lines are blank. In ad-hoc mode I get signal but I still get the "Network Problem" error message. In Infrastructure mode everything is blank.

The help file is not very helpful.

How do I do that?

OK I figure out how to check the IP address.

It shows:

IP Address 169.254.37.112
Netmask 255.255.0.0
Default Router 0.0.0.0

Ah, so you don't have a connection.
First question: did you ever made a connection before with an other wireless device to you WLAN? What did you do to connect it? :confused:

What type of WLAN do you have? b or g , do you have an encryption on it like WEP or WPA? Do you have MAC filtering configured? :confused:

The 770 can be configured to use less power to connect wirelessly (10mW or 100mW) You can find the configuration deep down in the advanced settings. This might explain the low reception.

Right now the access point has no encryption.
My wifes laptop connects fine to the router.

I am using the high power seting 100w

That is indeed strange. It could be that the router is not distibuting it's gateway address or DNS servers. You could try to copy the IP-address, subnet mask ,router address, and DNS servers from the laptop to your 770.
(if you don't now where to find them: run 'ipconfig /all' in a command shell on the laptop) Just increase the last number of the IP-address to avoid network conflicts.

Does your router broadcasts it's SSID? If you've turned broadcasting off on the router turn it back on to see if that will help (I once had a cheap WLAN card that lost connection for that reason)

Also I just went to Compusa and bought another Nokia 770 to test. At the store I found 3 unsecured WLAN access points but when I tried to connect the exact same thing happened, I got a "Network Problem" message and it wouldn't let me browse.

Now I wonder if it is something that I am not doing correctly that is causing the problem.

I need a huge favor. Can someone post a step by step guide to connecting the 770 to a unsecured and secured WLAN? Include every setting used (basic and advanced). I have searched this forum and the web but have not found a step by step guide beyond "just hit connect and youre browsing in minutes".


I reallly think I am not doing the right steps.
