What Version is Root in?

I flashed my 770 yesterday with the flasher so I can get access root. Now, I have a question. Is this firmware that I flashed it with unstable? What I mean is, is there an advantage of having the new firmware on it? Because I don't want to sacrifice stability for root. Also, when they release OS 2006, to upgrade, will we have to sacrifice root access? Thanks!

From the way I understand it, its the same software that you got with the device. All you did was put it in to rd mode. You don't want to leave it in RD mode though.

When you flash to 2006, when it's released, you'll have to flash to rd to gain root and then flash back to the production (standard) mode. You'll probably be with out root a whole 15 minutes.

Cool. And why wouldn't I want to leave it in RD mode?

Ok, I just realized my Internet Tablet isn't in the most recent update. So I am going to flash it to the new firmware and then flash it back into RD mode.

yep. have to rd it, change a file, then go back to regular mode.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't want to leave it in RD mode. But since I'm not a developer (and the page had all kinds of warnings about it (http://www.maemo.org/maemowiki/HowDoiBecomeRoot)) I don't see a reason to stay in RD mode.

Remember the typical user they are trying to sell this too, knows less about Linux, than they do about computers. I'm assuming that if it's in RD mode and you mistype something bad things will happen.

The only reason I want to keep it in RD mode is so I can switch back between USB Host and Peripheral mode quickly.

FWIW, 2006 OS may have an easier way to install root due to the way the new Application Installer works. I'm thinking you'll be able to install a deb and get a "Root terminal" menu item (which may well prompt suitable warnings when launched). No need for reflashing or anything like that.

While that makes it easier for the people who aren't linux freaks, it seems to take some of the fun away in my opinion. While I'm not a programmer, I do like to study new tech which includes breaking things.
