Why do VGBA and Battle for Westnoth refuse to work?

VGBA crashes when I load a ROM and Westnoth doesn't do anything when I load a campaign. Ideas?

If the ROM is gzipped, it may be helpful to gunzip it (and maybe gzip again with the newer gzip). I have found that OS2008 comes with a buggy libz that does not recognize some older .gz files. The libz in Ubuntu7, for example, has no such problem.
