[Canola] Plug-in request: RSS Feed Reader
I'm currently using Nibbles beta (by Spakman) as my main RSS reader and very much appreciate the work he's done on it. The only issue being the massive CPU usage of Ruby based apps. This means it runs down the battery fast.
I've asked Mark if he thinks he could make a nibbles plugin for Canola as it's my favourite interface on the N800. He said he'd love to, but thinks it'll be difficult due to Nibbles being Ruby based and Canola being Python based. So - if anyone is up to the challenge - I'd love and RSS reader for Canola. To make my N800 the ultimate pocket devices for me I'd want to be using Canola all the team... which means I'm missing the following plugins: RSS reader Web Browser launcher Email client. (modest launcher) Consider the gauntlet thrown. :) |

I should probably add the GPS maps application to that list - as it's the other biggy on the n8x0 series for me.

Re: Plug-in request: RSS Feed Reader
Hi Stooo,
To make what we think would be a canola rss feed, we would need one simple thing : a browser engine. We are studying that, but the work is not small (evas browser engine) but maybe it will become reality. It's possible however to do it a simple textual feed reader, but as a feed reader myself, I consider a little bit of " rich text " a must. Anyways, I think a RSS feeder can be a simple exercise for someone trying to do it's first plugin :) I think we can try publishing the parser example soon :) coming one more open source plugin : last.fm and about navigation: we did it (I showed the ui here) but not plans to release as we don't have maps : / About launchers: that would be even easier I think :)))) I would be quite happy if someone did it (we still heavily buried on upnp, debuging, media issues etc) Marcelo |
Re: Plug-in request: RSS Feed Reader
Last.fm will be the ultimate plugin for me, thank you very much. Well, being sincere, I also dream with the day we will have RSS reader on Canola, not only because it's a lacking feature in the tablets, but mainly because we won't need to change focus via hardware when, for example, listening to music. And it will be a feature that *only* the tablets will have.

Re: Plug-in request: RSS Feed Reader
yeah, I will not lie, I always wanted... but as in previous post for me it needed to be capable of rendering html to be "complete" but if you guys are ok with a simpler, textual (ok a little bit of rich text, and maybe a link to launch the browser could be done)
I will try to find someone to do that. Also good news for n800 users, a friend got the youtube source, and made the FM radio plugin :) we are just going to implement / help on the UI design (actually is the simplest of the whole canola) and add one planned (boookmarks) features to it. I think we are almost there! I wish we could solve the video and playback problems than I would be 75% satisfied :) the 25 missing ones are always there to show us that we are always after improvements Cheers, Marcelo |
Re: Plug-in request: RSS Feed Reader
That all sounds really good Marcelo
As for the text based feed reader. I really like the work Mark (Spakman) has done with nibbles so far. It displays pretty basic text based feeds, but used html to paragraphise the feeds. I do really like the seperation of the iterface windows though... I would imagine in canola - something like.... My Feeds menu - ..... Artical List (just showing titles/headlines) - ...........whole artical (no pictures, but with a link to open browser to see whole thing) I'd like there to be a way of showing which feeds have new articals once parced and then a difference between a new artical headline and one that's been read. Then some configuration to set how long articals are saved for, and if you want to keep and artical to read off line... even an option to save/download and html/browser page to read the whole artical offline with pictures etc. OK - this is starting to sound like a big request... but hey, you guys are so good at it :) P.S - quite looking forward to the lastFM plugin - though I'm not overly fussed about FM radio as I don't often use it. I'd use it more if it didn't need the headphones to be plugged in for an ariel. That said - if you make it, I know I'll use it a little. |
Re: Plug-in request: RSS Feed Reader
come to think of it - if we're talking about a browser launcher plungin.... imagine being able to browse your bookmarks in canola then launch the browser window from there :)
