Get more free space on /

Hi there ... today i was looking how to free some space on the root partition since it was really low ... I found out that there is plenty of space is wasted in /var/cache/apt/archives. Just cd there and do a
Code:

du -h -d 0
to see how much will be free after you just delete all this unneeded debian packages ... they have been downloaded and installed and now there is no other need for them. You should clear this directory after any install or update you did. I deleted some other stuff like timezones not useful for me and such things and i manage to get 60Mb free :)

I like to install localepurge too :)

Thanks for this :)

EDIT: I just checked, mine is empty. I think apt-get clean does the same thing.

As root, apt-get clean is the supported way of doing this.

Hey, this is a super tip! I am from the Fedora/RPM world on my desktop, and (up till now) no one had told me how to get rid of old stuff like this :)

I was able to free 58mb off my N800!

Only applications that are installed by apt-get from the commandline are archived there by the way. Not if you install then with Application Manager. But because Application Manager is so flaky often the only way to install something is by using apt-get.

Do we have files similar to IE temporary internet files that we can get rid off? Thanks.

There is a cache directory for the browser in /home/user, but its maximum size can be configured through the browser options.

There's no equivalent of the ever-growing C:\Documents and Settings\...\Temporary Internet Files and \Temp directories.

What Jaffa said, and there is not really a point in deleting it since you can set a maximum amount. No cache means slower browsing because everything has to be downloaded each time you revisit a page.
