Java for Internet on Nokia N800
Not sure if anyone has posted this as I can't find anything about it on the search.
Just got my N800 yesterday and so far I love it. Got it upgraded to OS2008 with no problem. It says I have Opera 8 installed. So heres the issue... I went to my favorite site (pogo.com) to play some games. Pogo uses Java for running their games online. When you load the game, it says you need Java and to go to their site to download for Linux. I tried downloading all the Linux self extracting files but can't install through the application manager. So some more research, I found out I need to install it manually. Tried to use X Terminal, but it won't let me in the root as I have no idea what the password would be. Fact is... I know nothing about Linux. I have been searching for some guidelines on how to accomplish this but no luck so far. I would be greatful for any instructions or guidance. I don't need to use anything else Java at this time... I just want it to work in Internet pages. |
Re: Java for Internet on Nokia N800
Did you try searching for java in thread titles before you posted this? the top result would have answered your question, I think.
Not sure what says you have Opera anything installed, but you don't. Or you didn't upgrade to OS2008, one or the other. |
Re: Java for Internet on Nokia N800
Do NOT try to install regular Linux apps onto the tablet. Go through maemo.org (downloads), tableteer, the Nokia OS2008 site and/or developer sites mentioned on this forum.
Java is not quite ready yet. Benson is correct: it's been discussed ad nauseum here. |
Re: Java for Internet on Nokia N800
thanks for the responses and I apologize.
Nokia says I have Opera 8: From: http://www.nseries.com/nseries/v3/me...800_en_R1.html Nokia N800 Technical Specifications General | Internet Tablet OS 2007 Edition | Package Contents General Access the Web on a portable internet tablet * High-resolution widescreen display with improved viewing angle * Opera 8 * Adobe® Flash® 9 browser plug-in And this is what it says in the About Product screen... Internet Tablet OS: maemo Linux based OS2008 Version: 2.2007.51-3 So what type of browser do I have and am I running OS2008??? |
Re: Java for Internet on Nokia N800
It also says you have OS 2007. When you upgraded your OS you switched to the MicroB browser.

Re: Java for Internet on Nokia N800
What about running J2ME on the tablet? Would that work?
|
Re: Java for Internet on Nokia N800
That's also available, but not quite useful. The specific implementation used is PhoneME, if you want to look it up.

Re: Java for Internet on Nokia N800
In an effort of not sounding too dumb... if I install a Java application that runs on the tablet, would a web page use that engine and run Java?
