Password Vault

Hello,

Does anypne have any recommendations for a password management app on the n810?

I used to use ewallet on Windows Mobile, which has the benefit of having multiple passwords for a single card (often the case with Cisco devices and bank logins).

Thanks,

Paul

I prefer Personal password manager (gpasman).

Did you google this forum before posting??

Yeah of course, and there are a ton of threads with people discussing the pros and drawbacks of the various options. Which is why I was asking for *recommendations* and figured a new thread was warranted.

But I let it drop and decided to do my own look around, but still, the options seem limited.

Gpasman doesn't seem to be in development anymore
Password Safe is functional at least - but I see compatibility issues with newer versions on Windows / Linux
Gringotts doesn't really work as a password vault
KeepassX looked promising but as it is not hildonised, the dialog boxes go off screen in critical places.

So I have left this a while - has any one got new recommendations for a password vault that works on maemo, general linux and Windows?

I'll give a weak recommendation for password safe. As I had stated in a previous post, it ain't pretty, but it works.

On the "general Linux / Windows" side, I use Password Gorilla. It has an option (Manage->Database Preferences...->Uncheck "Use Password Safe 3 format") to save databases in the older (v2) format of Password Safe. This allows my database to be read by pwsafe on the NIT.

I still haven't found one I'd recommend. All the ones mentioned have no import capability, and the implementations are weak, to say the least. This is the last thing keeping me carrying my Palm around. There is no way I'm going to manually type in hundreds of long passwords consisting of random characters. There are several robust password safes for PalmOS, but nothing worthwhile, at least to me, on Maemo. :(

Consider SSH (+ key, or OPIE) to a server containing a plaintext file w/your passwords (or GPGed or encrypted disk).

Addendum: or use SSHFS (FUSE implementation) instead of SSH.

A plain text file doesn't really do it when you are managing a large number of passwords. Equally, it is not possible to be online at all the times that you need a password (datacentres will often ask that do not take your mobile phone into secure areas). Besides, a solution that requires an online connection introduces a level of risk that isn't acceptable - the last thing you need is to tell a customer you cannot get their systems back online is because your phone ran out of juice as you were getting the admin credentials :)

Hmm, good point on the datacenter.

It depends on the format of the plain text file. You could make some scripts to grab specific output, or use SQL(ite) instead. It'd just require you to use the terminal. GnuPG is ported to NIT too, so that isn't an issue.

I've been able to successfully migrate from Palm O/S eWallet to notecase (http://notecase.sourceforge.net/) on my Win32 and N810. I can think of multiple improvements I'd like to see, but the important thing is that I can see my encrypted info on both devices. I just need to remember to sync the data file after making changes on one of the devices. Just another data point for you...
