Custom Maemo Image
 

Hi all,
Just got a 810 on Monday... I like it so far. My question is would it be possible to create a custom OS2008 image with programs installed, modules installed in the kernel and stuff take out (like skype etc)? If it is possible, does anyone know where I can find information on how to do it?

Well, one way to do it is to tailor your system to what you like, clone it all to an MMC, and then make an image of that. In Windows you can make the image with Acronis True Image. I think that with Linux you can use Partimage.

In Linux you can just copy the partition as a directory :)

If you do that, can you then just copy it to an ext2 formatted partition on an SD card and have the resulting card be bootable -- as it would be in Windows if you use Acronis (which, even though a Windows app, can read, create, and write to Linux partitions)?

Yes. That's what the "copy to SD card tutorial" do.

You should consider that the bootloader is not on the card :)

Thanks for all of the responses. What I would really like to do is create an image that I could flash to the device rather than booting to a mmc. Is that at all possible? If so, what would the steps be to accomplish this?

Hmm, kinda hard. Shouldn't be impossible though. In the process of creating this image it might help to be able to boot from sd/mmc though. It's hard to work with the jffs2 filesystem on a desktop as it requires either a real NAND device or a free chunk of RAM equal in size to the jffs2 fs you're trying to make. This isn't always easy to come by when that size is 256MB. If you could boot from SD and remount the internal flash read-only you could probably just use dd on /dev/mtdblock4 . Failing that, you could rsync / to your desktop, but then you'd still need to copy it into a jffs2 image before you could flash it. Hope that helps. Good luck!

I'd also be interested to hear any details of how to produce a finished image for the Nokia flasher. I am interested in backing up my custom config (an extended root partition, and lots of apps) this way.

fanoush explains how to do this in this post. It looks like there are some prerequisites, however; you need to have a bootable SD partition and fanoush's bootmenu set up...
