n810 browser problems
I have a 6 week old n810, freshly flashed with the latest OS, and I have also reset the settings back to original via Control Panel>>Tools>> Restore original settings.
The browser has difficulty accessing some generic websites. For example: gmail is impossible, google docs also, as is Picasa. All of these are pre-installed links in the OS, so I assume they should work OK, but all that happens is the hourglass spins and spins. Sites never load. Other sites do work: Yahoo and yahoo mail is OK, BBC UK, Washington Post, to mention a few. Why is this, and what can I do about it? I am on my home wifi setup, and whenever I have issues with the n810 I try accessing the same site on my laptop, and it works fine, so I doubt the connection/network is at fault. I have extensively googled the issue, searched the forums here, found nothing to guide me. Any help appreciated. |
Re: n810 browser problems
You said any help, and I'm taking you literally.
deluxe, it seems to me you shouldn't have those problems. Gmail loads for me, but seems to fight me on whether to use regular html or mobile; Google Docs and Picassa complain about my using an unsupported browser but they work. Only Google Docs for spreadsheets is a total bust for me. Maybe you could try a different useragent. I use the standard one, but look at Benson's suggestion. Maybe see this too; or this thread. However, to get back from impersonating an iPhone, don't go with the code used in Benson's post. Instead, use this. |
Re: n810 browser problems
Before you try anything complicated - make sure under "View", "Fit width to view" is NOT enabled. This useful sounding option botches up the vast majorify of webpages. And the whole point of having a high-res 800 pixel wide screen is that this option should not be necessary anyways!

I want to mention also, though, that I love Fit Width to View, when used at the right times. You probably have better sight close-up than I have; but for someone like me it's great on text pages, or appropriately-formatted complex pages, to blow up the magnification and simultaneously apply Fit Width to View. It makes for very easy reading (and works with text flow much better, and is easier to turn on and off, than enlarging font size). (In fact, this is another of the downsides for the Apple platform for me; it can't re-flow a magnified page like maemo, so someone like me is forced to choose between magnifying the text insufficiently or scrolling back and forth every line.) |
Re: n810 browser problems
Thanks, I was/am well aware of the "Fit to width" option. I get these issues whether that's checked or not. Like the poster above notes, sometimes it's a great option, I find, especially when i want to view primarily text-based sites, but magnified.
As an aside, which may help, this is the second n810 I have had in the last 6 weeks. The other exhibited the same browser issues too, but maybe not for identical sites ( I just can't remember now. I ended up returning it for exchange as, even though it was in a sealed box(and from LetsTalk)it was obviously not new. I would really suspect there's something weird with the 802.11b router here at home, but every other PC and PDA I own (5 other machines) works perfectly on it. BTW, before I do something stupid, can someone please explain something: When changing the User Agent string, I fire up the browser, then create a bookmark with the modified user agent string in the "address field". But what is the .......click "Set Preference".......referring to?? Assuming I have the idea right, I guess i create another bookmark like the above, but with the original UA String in the address field to switch it back??? |

"But what is the .......click "Set Preference".......referring to??" That's self-evident once you're in about:config. BTW, it takes Long time for the browser to respond on opening about:config and on setting preference. "Long" as in go have breakfast. |
Re: n810 browser problems
Well, I have successfully created the shortcuts to the iPhone and iPod touch User Agents, and another to switch back to default, all as per the helpful directions given in the above posts.
Depending on which UA I use, and which site I view, things have improved.....but I still can't get into gmail at all. I have tried various URL's, different UA's, still impossible. Any clues?? I reiterate, I can get into gmail using the same url as on the n810, but on my laptop on the same network. |
Re: n810 browser problems
That last line should read:
"I can't get to gmail on the n810, but I can get to gmail on my laptop using the exact same URL on both machines." |
Re: n810 browser problems
Have you tried going to a friend's house and using his/her router?
Also, try using this link instead: http://mail.google.com/mail/h/ It links to the HTML version of Gmail which I find provides a much better experience in the maemo browser anyway :) |
Re: n810 browser problems
The URL with the trailing h/ gets redirected to a different gmail url. When I compose there, and hit send, it doesn't seem to send at all, but the email appears immediately on my laptop.
Same when I leave the trailing h/ off the url. Finally a message comes saying "Upload failed", even though the email actually sent fine. I get the exact same behaviour at yahoo mail too with the n810. |
