flash memoery used as internal?
 

I'm totally new to this, but soon to get a n800, I was just wondering if the internal flash memory gets pooled with the the system memory, or is there a way to do that, or is the flash memory strictly used for storage? I've read posts that lead me to believe you can allocate flash ram to system ram, but as I sadi, I'm new. Thanks

A card in the internal memory card slot doesn't get pooled with the 256MB of onboard flash.

The control panel has an option to use the internal card for swap (virtual memory). And you can set applications to use the internal card slot to store downloaded maps and such.

But if you're ambitious, you can configure the N800 to use the internal slot as the system drive, inplace of the onboard flash. Look up "booting from mmc".

thanks, are there any significant drawbacks to booting from mmc? I'll be using a class 6 8gb SD card, and I would think it would be quite a bit slower than the system memory.

hmmm from what I hear the system's actually about 30% faster because you're system's stored uncompressed with journaling disabled :)

I can't say for myself, I haven't run any benchmarks, but my system (N810 with boot from internal mem) runs very snappily :)
