Re: How long it takes to lock your GPS lately?
I failed to get it locked on a sunny day in a moving car 12 noon time, bright hot, for 65 min. I did a cold reboot and it locked in 20.5 min. Before that, I have tried pointing to North, pointing to south, pray, curse and all woodoo, except to stop the car and stand still (some people reported that to be the most effective).
So please specify your conditions and what did you do to have it finally worked. And also, is this the original system OR you have tweaked it and you are reporting an improvement, something like that. My system, N810/2.2007.50-2 internal flash boot, original system, no tweak. TIA, bun |
Re: How long it takes to lock your GPS lately?
First of all my definitions, since they might not meet yours. I've found that generally my experience has run like this from worst to best. Everything is with it pointed south.
Worst case - Cold, Moved, Running lock - CMR - sometimes it doesn't lock. Attempting to establish a lock, after a few weeks off (cold) after moving over 500 miles (moved) at highway speed (running). CMS (still) - not moving - 5 to 20 minutes W (warm, having been fired up in the last couple of days)MR - 5 to 20 minutes WMS 5 to 10 minutes WC(close, not having moved far) R - less then 5 minutes WCS sometimes less than 30 seconds Two weeks ago I flew from Alexandria VA to Alexandria LA. Based on past experience I expected a CMS of 15 to 20 minutes. It locked in less than 4. Subsequent WMS were under a minute and WMR's about a minute. I sure hope that Diablo warms the GPS up!. /edit - original system |
Re: How long it takes to lock your GPS lately?
Oh, forgot to mention that a BT GPS, a no name brand got from newegg.com for $49.95 six month back, locked in less than a minute in open sky, in a moving car, or a couple of minutes inside a building. Thank god, the N810 still permit BT GPS and also worked very well with it. Just to put in this addendum in case some people desparate for a quick fix before the Nokia upgrade, soon, in the future, in the working.... :)

On the vote count...IMHO, the location of the GPS is at when searching for the fix...PST, EST, etc.....would give a higher factual understanding....as it seems location, location, location might give an understanding why the two largest groups <=3 and =>30 fixes are so far apart, hope not to offend, other than user not following the recommended use...:D, pointing, open space, etc...

Re: How long it takes to lock your GPS lately?
I only recently purchased my N810 but it hasn't had any trouble locking on to satellites within 3 minutes. To me this is an acceptable time frame for now. I will admit the unit is not EXACTLY correct with the coordinates but it is pretty darn close. I will say that the speed meter is definitely very accurate within a couple mph. Clocked me perfectly on the city street at about 35mph and then on the highway at like 68mph.
If down the road I feel the need to obtain an exact signal/readout then I will pony up the $$ for a BT receiver. Right now Im just fine with its performance. |
Re: How long it takes to lock your GPS lately?
40% users fixed in 5+ min. I would like to ask, if you are still around, a-gps addition with internet connection and Diablo update, does it help in the time to first fix?

Re: How long it takes to lock your GPS lately?
In writing minigpsd (which logs both the internal and BT gps) I've done extensive tests but haven't reviewed the latest logs.
AGPS frequently improves it, but there still appears to be a fundamental problem. I will get 8+ large bars but no lock for 5+ minutes. Other times it is 15 seconds. NO PATTERN. I get fast fixes near windows indoors and neverlocks under open sky (and the BT has happily locked and shows where all the satellites are, so they aren't all hiding behind something). When it gets a fix it tends to stay fixed. If I turn it on when it is near wifi and/or has been near a wifi connection, apparently AGPS (supld) picks up fresh enough data and that will allow a fast lock a majority of the time. But there are still points where it shouldn't have updated but locks, or should have updated but doesn't. |
