To Upgrade or Not to Upgrade
When 2K6 comes out, what is everyone planning on doing? I can say for sure that I'll install it the second I get my hands on it, but I strongly suspect the world will see it at the same time as the development community does.
75% of what I do with my 770 involves contributions by the development community. (Have I mentioned I love you people today?) With modification/recompilation necessary for the 2K6 OS, there is a good chance we will see an initial vaccuum so far as third party applications go. Are there going to be hold-outs that stick with the functionality brought by 2K5 until 2K6's application base matures? Sound off! |
I'm going to update first thing. I just use mine to surf the web and check emails anyway. If only for the better memory performance, I'm sold on the 2K6 OS. Google Talk and VoIP will be great to have as well though.

for what purpose i bought the tablet for, it suffices my primary needs. i will download the new version as soon as available but i will install it at my convienence (after i read all the reviews and comments).

Well I've been waiting for this new version like everyone else and I'd be eager to update, but I'm afraid that this incompatibility thing with existing arm binaries will be a killer for me. If it were only for existing apps that have been "ported" to maemo by the community I could wait it out until someone got around to recompiling them (like python or scummmvm) ; but I also depend on console apps (like Privoxy) that I snatched directly from the debian arm distribution and use as is. No one did anything special to it for maemo 2005, and if no one does for maemo 2006 either, I may not be able to building it from sources myself and will be left in the cold.
So it seems that for me this "upgrade" could take away as much as it gives, or more... |
If you are planning on waiting rather than upgrading, start downloading apps now that you might need.
Over on the developer mailing lists they are discussing deleting all the wiki application directory stuff as soon as 2006 is rolled out, only adding back apps that are 2006 ported. While this will avoid problems with folks trying to run 2005 apps on 2006, it totally destroys the ability to look up apps for those of us that are planning on staying with 2005 for debian arm compatibility. I'm not planning on signing up to dev to debate this with the experts, they would shoot me down in seconds... |
Hmm, thanks for the heads-up ! I tend to store on my PC all packages I have downloaded and/or installed on the 770, but I guess it's time to double-check that :-)

Thanks for the heads up! I should make sure I've got all the latest versions of the apps that I use. I really hope this doesn't cause a loss of momentum with the developers. On the other hand I'm sure there are many who were holding out for 2K6. Any word on a dev release of the OS to get the ball rolling sooner?

i dont think that ill update as soon as it comes out. i like rdesktop to much and gaim, etc.
ill update when more third party apps are avalible. |
Odds are high that I will update when it comes out without waiting. I don't use to many extra applications yet to really worry about it.
