CINGULAR GPRS Internet Setting WITHOUT DATA PLAN

My 770 works with these settings:

Phone: Motorola L6, Cingular Service WITHOUT any DATA Plan.

In the CONNECTION SETUP SCREEN

Connection Name: Cingular Wireless Internet
Connection Type: Packet Data

Next Page...

Access Point Name: wap.cingular (all lower case)
Dial Up Number: *99#***
User Name: WAPS.CINGULARGPRS.COM (all upper case)
Password: CINGULAR1 (all upper case)
Prompt Password at every login: (leave blank)

I recommend leaving the "Use Without Asking" option UNCHECKED in the CONNECTIVITY SETTINGS if you are not subscribed to any data plan - so the 770 will have to confirm that you want to connect via pay-per-use GPRS.

If you are able to get it to work with your Cingular phone, please post your phone model so we have a list of phones that are confirmed to work!

Enjoy!

Please remember that CINGULARs PayPer Use Plan is billed at .01KB. It adds up fast. A few minutes ion a NOKIA 770 could be $2-3 if full color and pics are viewed. This can be VERY costly.

You will not like your bill...

When you get your Cingular Bill, it will be a lot higher than you were expecting. When I had my old PocketPC, I downloaded a little over 8MB of stuff this way, with AvantGo, which is basically a full refresh of all my chosen stuff. 8MB is nothing, right?

Know this:

$0.01 (a penny) x 1 KB

1 MB is 1000 X 1KB = 1000 pennies = $10.00

8MB = 8 x $10.00 = $80.00!

My bill was usually $40/month, and that month, it was $120!

Be careful. That is why I would rather just pay the $20/month deal.

Thanks for the concerns.

My use for the 770 is purpose-specific... it stays in my car's glove compartment 98% of the time. I use the 770 only for its business internet and email function to get the information I need, and only when absolutely needed... nothing else.

I don't use the 770 to surf the web and I am always within reach of public WIFI and a home/business wireless network anyway. So, I only use the GPRS with the 770 only when I am forced to, i.e., when I am on the road and have to download an email to make a business decision.

To me that's cheaper than locking myself with a 2-year $20/month contract on a service I very seldom use.

I would like to think that there are many others that use the 770 for the same reasons.
