need expert advice (usb 3g modem possible method)
ok i have stumbled on this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vodafon...iver_for_Linux it lists my type of usb 3g dongle modem but i was wondering if it would work on the n800 i know it works on something called an eee http://forums.cnet.co.uk/-podcast-/i...last_post_date first from searchs i know the n800 can not power it (solved i have a plug in the wall usb charger that can provide it power through its 2nd usb cable(thats there for that very purpose)) the n800 needs to be set to host port (solved i believe there is an app that can toggle it) i am very new to linuz if i attempt this it would take me a day or two atleast and may not work through just me not getting to gripd with this over complicated os, if a linux guru could try this and comfirm if it works or not that would be really really appreciated |

That's just a graphical front-end; your dongle working or not is rather independent of that software.
I'd guess someone could compile it, but why? Unless you switch networks often, you can set up scripts once and be done. |

Agreed, it's just frontend for wvdial. We don't have it. Just use pppd.

if all else fails for your USB device connected directly, you could always grb a Cradlepoint PHS300 (3g/wifi router w/Li-Poly battery) and connect your 3G USB dongle to it then use wifi to connect to the router. It costs about $150 but it will save a ton of time and you get better power management (I think) by connecting over wif rather then powering the device via the USB port.
Some have mentioned a powered USB hub too...but to simplify I feel the pocket router is the better option as it's easier to manage and there is zero learning curve to figure out how to get it working via USB on the tablet. I use a Cradlepoint CTR350 with an external battery pack to connect over my Franklin CDU680 to the Sprint EVDO. BTW, both routers now support HSDPA and EVDO Rev.A But check to ensure your device is supported. I am assuming you want this all for portability/to be mobile. |

I found a Sony Ericsson V800 for 100E last year, and last summer, the nokia 6234 went for 130E. |

I'm awfully curious, tho. What kinda battery pack are you using with that router? And how long does it last?? |

I have the Cradlepoint PHS300 that I connect my 3g phone to, and stream wifi in my house. The PHS300 is battery powered and if your phone is fully charged, (the PHS300 also charges your phone while emitting wifi signal, good and bad) you can have wifi for about 2 hours per charge. The PHS300 is compact, about the size of the N810 but a little thicker, and very easy to use. I've been using mine for about a month and have been satisfied completley. The nice thing about this router is it turns a once individual use EVDO signal into a secure wifi signal that up to 10 different guests can be on at once. I bought mine for $153 including shipping from this website : http://www.rfwel.com/shop/product.php?productid=1158
Looks like it's going for $169 now. |

Well, I think I'd rather get an external battery pack anyway, but the more I look into this solution... it seems like the iPhone is what I want. It'll provide most internet tablet activities when I'm around WiFi, and it's possible to broadcast your internet to other WiFi devices with a lil' hacking and/or configuring. Imagine your MID / Tablet being your router... saves even more space, batteries, convenience, etc.
I've been trying to find an N800 for a good deal on eBay for the past few days and it isn't happening, so I'll prolly just kick my Treo to the curb and get an iPhone. I wish Android was here today!! I wonder if Android will be able to catch up to the iPhone marketing campaign. By the time Android's out, there will be 32GB iPhones for the cheap, maybe even refurbed ones. Whew, the future is soo bright!!!! |
