Trouble installing Java Runtime on N810
 

I am a new N810 owner. I want to use my 810 to access an area of my company's website that requires me to install Java Runtime V1.4 or 1.5.
My company's website linked me to the Java download site where the JRE downloads are availabel to download.

My first problem is that there are 4 different JRE download files for Linux OS:

1) Linux RPM (Self-extracting file)

2) Linux (Self-extracting file)

3) Linux X64

4) Linux X64 RPM

Which, if any, of these 4 files is the right one for my 810's OS (I've updated to 51-3).

I tried downloading and installing each of the 4 files listed above and got the same result with each file. I used the File Manager to attempt the install.

When I double clicked on hte file I got a message that read "Unabale to recognize file type jre-6u6-linux-i586.bin. Search for an application to open?".

I clicked on "OK".

When asked to select an application from the list I highlighted
Application Manager (not knowing what else to select) and clicked on "OK".

I clicked on "OK" to start the installation

I then got a message that read "Unable to install jre-6u6-linux-i586.bin file corrupt".

I got the same result when I tried to installall all 4 of the download files.

It is critical to my work that I be able to access the area of my company's website that I need the Java Runtime add on for. I would appreciate any help that my fellow readers can give me.

Hi L.W. :)

The N810 (and the other Internet Tablets) contain an ARMEL core processor manufactured by Texas Instruments. The .bin files on Sun's Java website for download are compiled for x86 processors which are manufactured by Intel.

If you want to get Java running on your device you'll have to look into a third-party runtime solution such as the one I use: Jalimo

This will give you a java runtime you can invoke from the command line using the normal java <JavaClassFile> or java -jar <JavaJarFile.jar>

Then, you can (using information garnered from this thread)

* Install Jalimo
* Install classpath-tools from the same repository
* open xterm
* run gappletviewer http://somewebaddresswithanapplet.com/
* Applet should pop open.

Hey Steve :)

No... that'll require Qole's IceWeasel... There was some talk about a plugin that can communicate with gappletviewer, but I don't think it'll run with our weird version of firefox :)

Waaahhh! :(

Ice Weasel is a cool name ... is this something that I have a chance of making work on my n810? I really, really need to access Java applets.

IceWeasel is Debian's renamed Firefox.. there is a licensing argument between Debian and Mozilla so debian strips all Firefox and renames it to IceWeasel.. but it's the exact same code/browser .. just under a new name.

It requires qole's chrooted debian or JohnX's Full Debian Install.
