ftp server on my laptop
hey
i'm a university student trying to set up an ftp server on my laptop so i can access my files from anywhere - i want to be able to download music and videos to my n800 from anywhere. to the point: i don't have access to my router settings (as far as i'm aware - the uni must control them) so does this make it impossible? i can manage with everything else (been reading instructions off lifehacker). any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance dave |
Re: ftp server on my laptop
Its really a simple process.
I never even accessed my router. Just be aware that the IP address can change on you during a DHCP renew. 1) What OS are you using. Its a simple matter of turning on the FTP Daemons in MacOS and Linux. For Windows you'd have to download a package. 2) Learn what your current IP is. (whether its DHCP or not won't really matter for a private FTP with a few people on it because you can always tell them of IP changes). 3) Turn on the daemon and use the FTP client of your choice. Usually in a browser its ftp://username@IP_address/path I have an FTP Server running on my laptop because its just easier for me to transfer files to my n810 using ncftp (or even the browser for quick installs). Also its quick for my wife to find a picture or something she needs on my laptop than navigating the SAMBA shares from her Vista machine. |
Re: ftp server on my laptop
thanks for the reply!
1) using windows vista home premium, so i don't think it's particularly set up for ftp like the professional or ultimate ones, but hopefully it'll still be possible. what packages do you mean? i have had a look no luck yet. i have used plenty of freeware to try and set up a server can do other steps tho! any more advice? thanks |

Re: ftp server on my laptop
http file server is a good place to start for windows I use it a lot on our home network.
You just drag the files you what on to the window and then you access your ip and the port you select and you can download them. You can also set it up for upload and have usernames and passwords on it http://www.rejetto.com/hfs/ |
